AIMS AND SCOPE
At the turn of the century, the age of visual information systems (VIS) has
arrived. Enabled by picture sensors of all kinds turning digital, visual
information will not only enhance the value of existing information, it
will also open up a new horizon of previously untapped information sources.
There is a huge demand for visual information access on the consumer side.
And, the handling of visual information is boosted by the rapid increase of
hardware and Internet capabilities. Advanced technology for visual
information systems is more urgently needed than ever before: new
computational methods to retrieve, index, compress and uncover pictorial
information. Also, new algorithms are requested allowing for access to very
large databases of digital pictures and videos. And, new systems with
visual interfaces integrating the above components in new types of image
databases. This will enable the construction of VIS radically different
from conventional information systems. Many novel issues will need to be
addressed: query formulation for pictorial information, consistency
management thereof, indexing and assessment of quality of these systems.
The conference will include, but is not restricted to, the following topics:
- Content-based indexing, search and retrieval
- Image databases
- Visual data modeling
- Visual information system architectures
- Feature (invariant) retrieval
- Picture representation languages
- Query models
- Optimization of pictorial queries
- Compression and image content
- Visualizing pictorial and non-pictorial information
- Hypermedia of picture and text
- Parallel processing in visual information systems
- Image crawling the web
- Picture book browsing
- Delivery of visual information
- Application areas of visual information systems
- Interactive segmentation for query definition
- Video databases
- Benchmarking

weekend after Visual Information Systems '99.
The conference is organized in cooperation with
- IEEE (approval pending)
- IAPR (approval pending)
and co-sponsored by
- University of Amsterdam
- NVPHBV, the Duth chapter of the IAPR

CONFERENCE VENUE
The workshop will be held at the
Aula of the University of Amsterdam,
Oude Lutherse Kerk,
Singel 411,
Amsterdam,
The Netherlands
The
aula of the University of Amsterdam
is the ancient conference centre in
the historical Amsterdam and is situated
in the central part of Amsterdam.
The
faculty of WINS,
University of Amsterdam
is situated on the WCW campus (Amsterdam science
park).
Amsterdam
is a sightseers paradise having all the advantages of a big city
such as culture, history, vibrant night life,
entertainment and good transport,
and having relatively few of the disadvantages: it is physically small,
beautiful, relatively
quiet and has a wide range of shopping facilities.
Accommodation for delegates will be available at hotels in Amsterdam.
The working language of the conference is English.

CAMERA READY
PAPER SUBMISSION
The format of the proceeding manuscript should follow the Lecture
Notes in Computer Science
LNCS-style sheet from Springer Verlag GmbH.
The
number of pages, for both oral and poster presentation,
is limited to 8.
Due to the requirements of Springer, your camera-ready manuscript should be sent
on paper AND electronically.
Therefore, please send three printed copies of your camera-ready munuscript,
before February 22th,
to:
VISual99
University of Amsterdam
Faculty of WINS
Kruislaan 403
1098 SJ Amsterdam
The Netherlands
AND mail the electronic version of your camera-ready
manuscript to
email:visual99@wi.leidenuniv.nl
The electronic version should contain both postscript output and source files
needed to regenerate the postscript file.
The prefered source is a (Latex) *.tex file with associated style files,
image and/or figure *.eps files, *.bib and *.dvi file assembled in a
subdirectory, combined in a tar file and compressed using (g)zip.
Springer also offers support for Word sources: use their word style file(s)
and make a subdirectory with the postscript output and source files
like *.doc, style files and image files; combined in a tar file and (g)zipped.
