Introducing HIMS

Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff (1852-1911)
In 1901 the Dutch chemist Jacobus Hendricus van 't Hoff was the first scientist to receive the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. He is best known for laying the foundations for stereochemistry. Van 't Hoff was Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Geology at the University of Amsterdam.

Introduction

Chemistry research at the University of Amsterdam has a long-standing tradition of focusing on relevance. To rise to important challenges from society - and to be a strong player in mayor research initiatives - researchers from different chemistry disciplines have combined forces within the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS). We achieve great synergy if we can compute, understand, implement, demonstrate and validate molecular solutions to the important problems facing society today.

Thus the mission of HIMS can be described as:

Addressing important issues in science and society through the design, synthesis, analysis, theoretical- and fundamental understanding and application of novel functional (supra-) molecular systems with well-defined structural and physical properties and selective reactivity.

Research

The HIMS research targets sophisticated (supra-)molecular systems with well-defined structural and physical properties and selective reactivity. Our challenge is the design, synthesis and analysis as well as the theoretical and fundamental understanding of these promising molecular systems.

Research at HIMS is organized in five multidisciplinary research themes:

  • Bio-Molecular Synthesis
  • Catalysis
  • Computational Chemistry
  • Macromolecular and Biosystems Analysis
  • Molecular Photonics

These themes cover fields in chemical sciences where in the next decade interesting new developments and important breakthroughs are anticipated. In the long term the HIMS research topics are envisaged to be pivotal for the development of a sustainable society.

Education

Staff members of the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences contribute to a variety of educational programmes. HIMS expertise provides a firm knowledge base for the UvA Chemistry courses at the Bachelor's and Master's levels. HIMS members are also involved in a variety of other Bachelor's and Master's courses which involve chemistry education. And HIMS frequently offers opportunies for obtaining a PhD degree.
