The ICG, Centre for Geo-ecological Research — Interuniversitair Centrum voor Geo-ecologisch onderzoek) is a research school in which participate 160 researchers (80 staff members and about 60 PhD Students).
ICG co-ordinates and organizes geo-ecological research at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), Utrecht University (UU), the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RuG), and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven), Belgium. Moreover ICG has a Memorandum of Understanding with Alterra Green World Research in Wageningen and the Netherlands Institute of Applied Geoscience TNO (NITG-TNO).
The school is officially recognized by the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1994. This recognition has been renewed in 1999 and again in 2004.
The ICG research programme ‘Patterns and Processes in Changing Environments’ investigates the evolution of landscapes over a range of spatial and temporal scales; the response of landscape-forming processes to tectonic, climatic, biotic, human and other factors; the transport of water, sediments and chemicals in the landscape; the formation of spatial patterns of landscape elements as a result of these processes; and evaluates the landscape in terms of hazards, risks and sustainability.
This description reflects the scientific mission of the ICG, which is “to enhance the understanding of how landscapes function and respond to environmental change, through the integrated study of patterns and processes in geo-ecosystems”.
