Network Organization
Clusters
Solaris, Linux, Windows and MacOS systems within FNWI are grouped in clusters.
Each cluster has at least one fileserver.
By far the largest cluster is the "staff" cluster, using a large fileserver
on the WTCW campus that holds user data for all staff members.
Accounts
Any user with an account on a certain cluster can -in principle- work (log in) on any system
within that cluster. Usernames withing the FNWI are always the same, passwords are seperate
for each cluster.
Accounts are personal and non-transferrable. Do not give your password(s)
to anyone, including ICT staff.
Secretary staff can apply for accounts for new institute staff-members on the
support page.
Changing Passwords
The procedure for changing your password on a given cluster can be
found on the password page.
Access restrictions
Workstations for different institutes (take for example the KdV and IBED
institutes) are connected to the same fileservers (wtcw-server and rec-server).
Per default, users belonging to one institute cannot access workstations
belonging to the other institute. Otherwise it would be too easy to (ab-)use
each others workstations. This default restriction can be relaxed and
configured in a much more finegrained fashion, but only on request from the
director of an institute (and can be used for joint network computing efforts).
Home directories
On all clusters your homedirectory is /home/username (where `username' is
your username. Regardless on which system within the cluster you log
in, you'll find your files in the same place.
Homedirectories on different clusters are not shared. E.g., if you have three
accounts, you'll have three different homedirectories, one for each cluster.
