A brief history of wireless at the FNWI

In the course of 2002 the FNWI WLAN project was started. This was based on experience we had had with the "Mobile classroom" project and earlier research of the FNWI ICT-Group.

Some time later, the UvA Wireless project was set up. This used the 802.1x technology that was developed at SURF. We then decided to use the same technology for the FNWI WLAN, but to keep the FNWI WLAN in place. The reason for this is that we could offer services through the FNWI WLAN, that couldn't be offered through UvA Wireless.

This reasoning no longer holds with the reorganisation of the "gemeenschappelijke diensten". So the businesscase for keeping the FNWI WLAN is no longer valid. Even further, having two seperate networks offering the same services is just an unnesescary complication. Because of this, the informatiseringscentrum will no longer actively support the FNWI WLAN and it has been turned off.

Configuration of UvA WLAN

The UvA WLAN can be accessed using one of two network IDs (essid-s). The first essid is uva. Using this you can gain access to the UvA WLAN at every location in the university that has an accesspoint. The second essid is eduroam. Eduroam is an international network of cooperating institutes that trust eachother's authentication. Using this essid you should be able to gain access to the WLANs of most dutch universities.
