The WWW service
The www service is hosted on the server "info.science.uva.nl".
You access the server through the URL (=universal
resource locator)
http://www.science.uva.nl/
The names www.science.uva.nl (and ftp.science.uva.nl for the classic FTP service)
are nicknames for the server info.science.uva.nl.
For security reasons login-access to the Web server is limited. However,
all users anywhere in the faculty network can access the files on the web server.
On unix systems you'll find the files in the directory /home/web. On
PC's you'll find the files on the networkdrive \\server\web (substitute
server with the name for your department server).
Info has its own network connection to the outside world, so Web network traffic
will not disturb internal network traffic.
To create your own personal homepage look here.
Webserver software
The web service runs on a Linux dual processor system. The web server software is the
open source Apache server, supporting PHP, CGI, Tomcat and many other extensions. Web
based software can be supported by the "dbm" database server which support MySQL and PostgreSQL.
Each institute has its own web site, also hosted on the main webserver. Faculty
departments can also have their own websites.
For an institute there is one contact who acts as a liaison between the ICT group and
the web site maintainers in the institute.
The institute web pages are all located in the directory /home/web. Each
institute has a separate subdirectory there to store the web site.
PC users can find the web sites using the share: \\server\web where server
is replaced with the name of the department server.
Several guides, standards documents and utility programs are provided to
aide in building your web site.
Support
Support for the Web service is provided by the ICT group. You may submit requests
through Online Support.
