Fedora Core 3 migration: these hosts will lose scratch content  -  Wednesday May 25th 2005, 10:30.

The faculty wide migration of the Linux hosts to Fedora Core 3 is almost complete. We have migrated 198 out of 225 targeted hosts (A number of hosts used for educational purposes will be switched after the trimester). The hosts that remain to be migrated are:

ampere, boyle, celsius, cimex, den, epe, equator, euler, eulogia, fama, faraday, joule, kelvin, marquez, moebius, nics, odin, papaya, pascal, plus, recordame, snoopy, squid, tetrode, thebe, tintin, young

Unfortunately, these machines need to be repartitioned and therefore will lose the content of their scratch partitions.

As you will remember, the contents of scratch partitions is not actively backuped in any way by the ICT Group. Therefore, if you have data on the scratch of any of these machines, it is important that you save it yourself _before_ the migration.

We repeat:
Any important data on the scratches of the above hosts should be moved to a save location (and put on backup) before wednesday, june 1st 2005

With kind regards,

The FNWI ICT Group [ad interim]

[FNWI WLAN] Please renew your CA certificate  -  Monday May 2nd 2005, 17:30.

The network-equipment in the Matrix 4 building will be adjusted. From friday february 11th 2005, 17:30 hrs until monday february 14th 2005, 09:00 hrs, network connectivity may fail for workstations in the Matrix 4 building

Sunday, February the 13th, the ICT-group will disconnect the network-equipment and re-connect it. To facilitate this, the core network equipment in Matrix 4 needs to be reconfigured. The latter will be done on friday february 11th, 17:30 hrs.

To prevent loss of data, we ask that you leave your computer ON, but logged of.

new printers AH-2  -  Monday December 20th 2004, 09:00.

Some time ago, HP-printers have been placed along side the existing printers on the ground, 1st and 2nd floor of the AH-2 building. These new printers can be taken into use after an update that is planned to take place in the upcoming weekend.

A new printer has been placed on the 3rd floor that replaces the old lexmark printer. This lexmark printer has been removed because of a shortage of space.

Planning and actions ICT group

The pc-s that are under ICT-Group maintenance will receive an update this weekend (providing that the pc will remain switched on and that it's user will be logged of).

During a short period of time, the old and new printers will both remain operational. However you are requested to start using the new printers as soon as possible.

What you can do

The (new) name of the printer you want to use can be found on a label that is placed on the printer.

Users of ICT Group serviced laptops are requested to contact us for an update. (mailto:support@science.uva.nl).

Apple

User of a Mac system can find a manual that explains how to install the new printer driver (sorry dutch only) here.

Should you not be able to perform the installation, you can send an email to mailto:support@science.uva.nl .

Linux and MS Windows

Self maintained Linux and MS-Windows computers will need to have the configuration modified to print through print-queues that are provided by the wtcw-server.

Effects on "old" configurations

Since year and day the FNWI makes use of printserver to offer print capabilities to client applications ("printing programs").

In older configurations it can occur that it makes direct contact to a printer. This was never supported by the ICT-group and now with the introduction of the new printers, it is technically impossible.

Specifically this means that every configuration that contains settings that specify direct access to a printer, will have to be adapted. In the current state they will not work with the new printers.

In case you experience difficulties

In case you experience difficulties that you find to be in relation to the introduction of the new printers, we ask you to report this as soon as possible through a job with subject: [PRINTERDIFF AH2].

The email adres of the ICT service-desk is: mailto:support@science.uva.nl

These jobs will recieve priority treatment.

With kind regards,

Jeroen Roodhart FNWI ICT Group

Upgrade UvANet-connection Mauritskade 57/61   -  Tuesday September 7th 2004, 16:00.

On tuesday september 7th 2004 the core network connection of the buildings Mauritskade 57 and Mauritskade 61 will be upgraded to a fiber-optic connection.

Unfortunately to accomplish this, it is necesarry that there will be a disruption of UvANet/internet connectivity in these buildings from 16:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs that day.

Ofcourse the upgrade will result in faster connections to the UvANet/internet in these buildings.

Sorry Staff+Email Server Down   -  Monday August 9th 2004, 18:00.

Maintenance FNWI network monday august 9th  -  Monday August 9th 2004, 16:00.

On monday august 9th, we have to do some mainenance on the FNWI network which will result in downtime from 16:00 hrs. to approx 22:00 hrs.

In the past we have experienced server-outages due to failure of the power supply system in the main serverroom at the WTCW during peakconditions. As reported earlier we have to take provisions to prevent this from happening in the future.

On monday august 9th, the ICT-Group plans to replace the underperforming power-automatas with new ones that will be able to handle higher peak loads.

As you can imagine, this is quite an operation so we have to reserve some time outside the regular maintenance window to be certain we can complete the operation on monday.

This means that on monday august 9th you will not be able to access the FNWI network from 16:00 hrs until work is finished (hopefully before 22:00 hrs)

We apologise for the inconvenience

Large reported amount of viruses stored in ZIP attachments  -  Tuesday July 27th 2004, 18:00.

It has been reported to the ICT-Group that a large number of new computer viruses that spread through ZIP-attachments is going around.

Although the anti-virus systems on the mail-servers probably will intercept most viruses, it is possible that some will slip through.

Hopefully completely unnecessary, we strongly advise not to open any attechments from which the origin is unclear.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Upgrade webmail software  -  Friday July 9th 2004, 18:00.

This evening (july 9th, 2004) we will upgrade our webmail software to a new version. This version introduces, aside from the usual bug- fixes, the following improvements:

  • Performance, this version should be faster than the previous.
  • Appearance, most people find this version to be better looking.
  • Better security during use in internet cafes.
Many webbrowsers have a "feature" that facilitates storing the content of forms for later use. In public venues this can lead to undesirable situations. Someone that uses the computer after you, should not have access to data you filled in on some form on the internet.

The new software now tries to prevent this "storing of form data".

Planning and steps taken by the ICT Group

This evening (july 9th, 2004) the webmail software will be upgraded. This means that the webmail service may be interrupted for a short period of time.

If you experience a problem afterwards

The upgrade should, apart from the short interruption of service, not have any negative effect on your use of the webmail service.

In case you do experience a problem that you think is related to this upgrade, please send an email to support@science.uva.nl with as subject:
WEBMAIL upgrade

These calls will be given priority treatment

Power outage on major filesystems  -  Tuesday June 1st 2004, 16:30.

OK, It's one of those days ;)

Whilst trying to diagnose a problem on a certain subsystem in the RAID-enclosure there was a powersurge that overloaded the fuses and rendered a largepart of the WTCW server park in an inconsistent state.

Needless to say we are in the process of bringing these servers back up. We expect to have everything up and running within an hour or so.

[UPDATE 18:36] It's _really_ one of these days. We've encountered serious filesystem errors on the imap-filesystem. This will take a _long_ time to rebuild and until then you will unfortunately not be able to access your email.
--JR

[UPDATE 00:57] We finished the rebuild of the filesystem. We had some sparse errors so if you are the unfortunate soul who has lost some part of your mailbox, please contact support@science.uva.nl

We should be up and running now ;)

We apologise for the inconvenience,

With kind regards,

Jeroen Roodhart
FNWI-ICT-Group

[Post Scriptum 02-06-2004 12:00]
Ofcourse we have done some post-crash analysis on why/how this has come to pass. We have found that the powerbricks that supply the RAID systems performed far under the specified norm (i.e. they are defective ;)). These have been replaced, but maybe we will have to do maintenance on the total powerrail system in the server-room in the future. Ofcourse when this is the case, you will be informed accordingly.

File inconsisitencies rec-server repaired  -  Tuesday June 1st 2004, 09:00.

This morning we experienced a large number of inconsistencies on certain hard-disks of the RAID-system of the rec-server.

To repair these, we needed to take the rec-server off-line for a period of time, which resulted in down-time for the users which have their home-directories hosted by the rec-server.

The repairs are now completed and operations have returned to normal

We apologise for the inconvenience,

With kind regards,

MyDoom or Novarg email worm  -  Tuesday January 27th 2004, 13:00.

A new email worm called MyDoom or Novarg has been reported as being in a state of "aggressive propagation". The worm infects MS-Windows computers on which mail attachments are automatically (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora) or manually opened.

The antivirus system on the FNWI mailserver was updated to block the worm as soon as new virus signatures became available, thus the FNWI mailserver is immune to the worm and will zap messages containing it. Furthermore all machines which are managed by the ICT-Group have received appropriate upgrades to the anti-virus software and should be able to detect this new worm.

As always we kindly request that you are careful when opening unknown email attachments, since there is a probability that you activate a virus/worm in doing so.

FNWI ICT trial installations: Redhat Linux 9 with 2.6.1 kernel  -  Tuesday January 27th 2004, 13:00.

As part of the extensive project of adapting the FNWI ICT Linux configuration system to deploy Redhat Linux 9 installations, we are currently running trials with a selected number of users.

The object of these trials is to find out if our configuration meets the needs of our diverse user base, and to fix any problem that hasn't surfaced during the preparation phases.

As a result of these trials we have found that the Linux 2.4 kernel that we initally deployed is unstable under certain loads. As a consequence it has been decided to push forward the introduction of the new Linux 2.6.1 kernel. Not only is this kernel more stable than it's 2.4 counterpart, we think you will also find it to be more responsive.

Barring unforeseen issues, we hope to be able to end the trialphase within one month. Please keep a watch on this page for information about the eventual faculty-wide introduction of Redhat 9.

New Windows virus  -  Monday September 22nd 2003, 09:00.

A new Windows virus was discovered last week. This virus propagates through email and supposedly originates from "Microsoft Corporation Progam Security Division" and is sent to "Microsoft Corporation Client".

The contents of the email invites you to install a September 2003 security update."Microsoft Corporation Client".

When you receive such an email delete it immediately. Security updates are installed by the ICT group, not by ordinary users. Furthermore, Microsoft never sends updates through email.

The FNWI mailserver and centrally managed desktop systems are immune to the virus; your personal laptop however, may not be immune.

Windows NT/2000/XP Shutdown button removed  -  Friday August 29th 2003, 21:00.

By removing the Shutdown button the ICT Group wants to encourage users to leave their Windows PC's turned on at night and during weekends. See also the Update page.

At night and in the weekend the ICT Group installs updates on Windows PC's. Among these are the updates for antivirus software. Regarding Windows viruses and worms the past summer was extremely hot and the updates were proven to be very necessary. Not only for your Windows PC but also for the ones used by your collegues inside and outside the faculty.

So please leave your Windows PC turned on at night and during the weekends and do logoff. If you want to save energy, you may turn off the monitor.

If your PC is turned off during the weekend, no updates can be installed and the possibility is very real that withing minutes you switch your PC back on it is infected by a virus or worm.

Restarting a Windows PC If you must restart a Windows PC, you'll find a button to do this in the login screen.

Virus W32/Sobig.f worm outbreak under control  -  Tuesday August 19th 2003, 15:00.

A new email worm was discovered worldwide around 12:00 CET. The worm infects Windows computers on which mail attachments are automatically opened (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora).

About 10 Windows systems at FNWI were infected an cleaned by the ICT group. The FNWI mailserver has a rather high load because it has to scan much more incoming email due to infections elsewhere on the internet. The antivirus system on the FNWI mailserver was updated to block the worm as soon as new virus signatures became available (around 15:00 CET).

If you receive a mailmessage with an attachment and the message itself only contains the text "Please see the attached file for details." delete the message immediately. DON'T open the attachment.

The FNWI mailserver is immune to the virus and will zap messages containing the virus.
