Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics

Welcome to the website of the Korteweg-de Vries Institute (KdVI)

The Korteweg-de Vries Institute is the mathematical research institute of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. As our mission statement indicates, our research covers many branches of mathematics, ranging from the very pure to the applicable. The first professor in mathematics at our university, Diederik Johannes Korteweg, and his PhD student Gustav de Vries lend their names to our institute. Together they studied the differential equation that now carries their name. As it plays a very important role in present day mathematical physics, the name of our institute also reflects how much we value the cross-fertilization between mathematics and other disciplines.
