The Korteweg-de Vries Institute of the University of Amsterdam offers three distinct Master Programs in mathematical sciences:

  • Mathematics (tracks ranging from algebraic geometry to numerical analysis)
  • Mathematical Physics (for those with serious interest and talent in both mathematics as well as theoretical physics)
  • Stochastics and Financial Mathematics. (Tracks are ranging from financial mathematics to mathematical statistics and applied probability. A special track on applied mathematical finance is supplemented by courses offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business.)

Master studies in mathematical sciences are part of the Amsterdam Graduate School of Science, a recently founded graduate school operated jointly by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and VU University Amsterdam (VU).

General programme director for the Korteweg-de Vries Institute is Dr. Ale Jan Homburg, though each of the three programs also has its own coordinator.

Student assistantships

For students in our three mathematical master programmes there are usually some teaching assistantships available. Requirements include a good knowledge of mathematics as taught in bachelor courses, and fluency in Dutch or English. Please contact Dr. Chris Zaal for more information.
Foreign applicants for the master programme in financial mathematics may apply for a grant to finance the tuition fees and costs of living. These grants are made available by several Dutch financial institutions. Please contact Dr. Robin de Vilder for more details.

The contents of the courses in each of the three programs are described in the Digital Course Catalogue, in which also information about requirements, study load and lecturers can be found.

Together with the Faculty of Economics and Business a double master programme is offered that combines the MSc Stochastics and Financial Mathematics or the MSc Mathematics with the MSc Econometrics. Read more information.

Courses offered in the nationwide Dutch Master Program in Mathematics are listed in this Course Catalogue as well, but it is advised to check also the course description at their website (see also below).

National Master Courses

For each of those three programs there are substantial possibilities to attend courses from the Dutch Master Program in Mathematics

These are special courses, given at central locations in the Netherlands, for students in all local Mathematics Master programs in the Netherlands simultaneously.

For attending these courses one may have to travel to other cities, but if necessary this will be financially supported by UvA.
