    Noncommutative geometry in a nutshell

Abstract: /The aim of this talk is to give an intuitive idea of what noncommutative geometry is. Without elaborating on technicalities, I will sketch the history of the subject, and the motivation for studying it. Finally I will discuss some examples ocurring in my own research, coming from limit sets of Kleinian groups. I will only assume some basic ring theory and functional analysis. / http://staff.science.uva.nl/~svdstelt/aioseminar0809.html

  • 17 September 2008, General Mathematics Colloquium Finite loop spaces, Room P.014; Plantage Muidergracht 24, Amsterdam

    Speakers: Tilman Bauer, Vrije Universiteit
Date and time: Wednesday 17 September 2008, 11.15

A finite loop space is the homotopy theorist's version of a compact Lie group -- no manifold structure, just a finite homotopy type with a multiplication. How different are these two concepts from each other? Although there are many more finite loop spaces than there are compact Lie groups, there is still a strong structural analogy, and finite loop spaces can be classified in a "local" setting, which I will explain. One striking consequence of this classification is that every finite loop space can be realized as a smooth manifold -- albeit at the cost of losing the multiplication map.

  • 1 October 2008, General Mathematics Colloquium, Walter van Suijlekom (RU)

    Speaker: Walter van Suijlekom (RU)
Title: The structure of perturbative quantum gauge theories
Date and time: Wednesday 1 October 2008, 11.15-12.15
Location: Room P.014, Euclides Building, Plantage Muidergracht 24, Amsterdam

Quantum gauge theories are the building blocks of the extremely well-tested Standard Model of high-energy physics. It describes all known elementary particles and their interactions. Mathematically, however, these theories are not so well understood, in sharp contrast to their classical counterparts. We try to unravel the structure of quantum gauge theories by taking a perturbative (i.e. formal power series) approach. In particular, we try to understand two aspects of quantum gauge theories: renormalization and quantum gauge symmetries.

After a brief introduction to these two physical ideas, we describe them mathematically in terms of a Hopf algebra and a Gerstenhaber algebra, respectively. We also establish their connection by (co)representing the Hopf algebra on the Gerstenhaber algebra. The so-called master equation satisfied by the physical Lagrangian due to gauge invariance implies the existence of the quantum symmetries on the level of the Hopf algebra. In this way, we rigorously show that renormalization is compatible with the quantum symmetries.

Title: Markov additive processes with one-sided jumps
Date and time: Friday 10 October 2008, 16.00-17.00
Location: Room P.014, Euclides Building, Plantage Muidergracht 24, Amsterdam

In this talk I will consider a Markov additive process (MAP) with one-sided jumps. This process can be seen as a Levy process (a process with stationary independent increments) in Markov environment. It is an important generalization of the latter process with a number of applications including queueing systems. I will spend a considerable amount of time to introduce MAP and to describe some basic properties of this process. Then a correspondence relation between characteristics of MAP and its record process will be presented. This relation can be used to derive some important results, e.g. the stationary distribution of a queue with Markov-additive input.

Date and time: Wednesday 15 October 2008, 11.15-12.15
Location: Room P.014, Euclides Building, Plantage Muidergracht 24, Amsterdam

I will start by giving an introduction to index theory and explaining how ideas from quantum mechanics and noncommutative geometry play a role. In particular, these ideas yield a promising approach for extending the index theorem to certain singular geometric situations.

  • 17 October 2008, AIO Seminar Mathematics, Ricardo da Silva (UvA)

    Speaker: Ricardo da Silva (UvA)
Title: Iterative Methods for Eigenvalue Problems
Date and time: Friday 17 October 2008, 16:00-17:00 hrs
Location: Room P.014, Plantage Muidergracht 24

Abstract: The use of more complicate and/or accurate models in the natural sciences results, in many situations, in the need for eigenvalues of very large matrices. Although they are usually sparse, the size of such matrices is currently of $\mathcal{O}(10^{6})$ and still increasing. This explains the continued research in the development of faster and more efficient eigensolvers.

My aim in this talk is to provide an introduction to the most known iterative methods for eigenvalue problems. From the simple single-vector iterations to the more recent subspace methods I will attempt to give an overview of their potential, highlighting the mathematical reasoning behind each of them.

  • 29 October 2008, General Mathematics Colloquium, Bert Zwart (CWI)

    Speaker: Bert Zwart (CWI)
Title: Fluid and diffusion approximations of bandwidth sharing networks
Date and time: Wednesday 29 October 2008, 11.15-12.15
Location: Room P.014, Euclides Building, Plantage Muidergracht 24, Amsterdam

Bandwidth sharing networks are stochastic networks that model congestion in computer and communication networks in which multiple users are served simultaneously, sometimes by several servers.

We give a brief introduction to the modeling and analysis of this type of networks, and then focus on a specific problem: We analyze a bandwidth sharing network that is overloaded. Using limit theorems for measure valued stochastic processes and convex analysis techniques, we identify the growth rates of the number of users in the system, which allows us to obtain a functional law of large numbers. Time permitting, we also discuss extensions to models with impatient users as well as limited versions of bandwidth sharing.

Title: On a Support Theorem for the Classical Radon Transformation
Date and time: Friday 31 October 2008, 16.00-17.00
Location: Room P.014, Euclides Building, Plantage Muidergracht 24, Amsterdam

Abstract: The transformation that maps a function on R^n to its integrals over the hyperplanes in R^n is called the classical Radon transform. A natural question to ask is: Is the support of a compactly supported function determined by the support of its Radon transform? The aim of this talk is to show that this is indeed the case.

Title: A computer-verified implementation of Riemann integration - an introduction to computer mathematics
Date and time: Wednesday 12 November 2008, 11.15-12.15
Location: Room P.014, Euclides Building, Plantage Muidergracht 24, Amsterdam

The use of floating point real numbers is fast, but may cause incorrect answers due to overflows. These error can be avoided by hand. Better, exact real arithmetic allows one to move this bookkeeping process entirely to the computer allowing one to focus on the algorithms instead. For maximal certainty, one uses a computer to check the proof of correctness of the implementation of this algorithm. We illustrate this process by implementing the Riemann integral in constructive mathematics based on type theory. The implementation and its correctness proof were driven by an algebraic/categorical treatment of the Riemann integral which is of independent interest. This work builds on O'Connor's implementation of exact real arithmetic. A demo session will be included. (Joint work with Russell O'Connor).

  • 14 November 2008, AiO Seminar Mathematics, Igor Stojkovic (UL)

    Speaker: Igor Stojkovic (UL)
Title: Gradient flows on metric spaces, and the Wasserstein space of probability measures
Date and time: Friday 14 November 2008, 16.00-17.00
Location: Room P.014, Euclides Building, Plantage Muidergracht 24, Amsterdam

A gradient flow on a Hilbert space H is a solution of equation of the type d/dt x(t)=gradf(x(t)) where f is a convex lower semi-continuous function on H. An equivalent formulation of the problem, where only the distance is used can be developed and subsequently posed on any (complete)metric space. In order to have solutions one needs to "translate" convexity to the metric setting too. It turns out that these solutions induce a (semi)contraction semigroup as well. As an application we will see that the classical equations such as the Fokker-Planck eq., which includes the heat equation as a special case, can be seen as a gradient flow on the Wasserstein space of probability measures on R^n.

  • SIGMA prijs op Lowlands uitgereikt aan het project DISWIS van de Praktijk

Newsitem added on 22 August 2008.
