Louise Gunning appointed president of Executive Board UvA and HvA
Prof. Louise Gunning-Schepers has been appointed president of the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) by the Supervisory Boards of the two institutions. The appointment is effective as of 1 April 2012.

Sleep deprivations alters brain structure

Major NWO grant for researching paints used in fine arts
Within the framework of Science4Arts programme, The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has provided funding for the project titled ‘How paint changes: consequences for conservation, presentation and preservation of paintings from Van Eyck to Mondriaan'. The UvA (Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Science) will coordinate the research. NWO awarded a total of € 3.6 million to six different projects.

'Secret Signals: odors of plants in distress' visualized by Rogier Arents
A phenomenon called 'indirect plant defense' is an important research topic investigated by the population biologists of IBED together with the plant physiologists of SILS at the Faculty of Science. The research has now become the central topic of the latest movie made by the designer Rogier Arents of the Design Academy at Eindhoven.
