    Research organization

The Dean is responsible for the research policy of the Faculty of Science, and is supported in this field by the Head of Research, Office of Academic Affairs. Research at the Faculty of Science is organized in ten research institutes, each of which carries out its own scientific research programme which is determined every four or five years. Furthermore, the research institutes carry out research projects for external institutions such as e.g. the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek, NWO), various Ministries, the European Union and various business ventures. Each research programme and research project is headed by a professor. The Faculty employs about 100 regular professors (usually with a full-time appointment) and 40 professors by special appointment (who are generally assigned to the university for about one day per week).
