Lambda performance

Performance of the trans-Atlantic lambda with UDP

To get a feeling of the behaviour of a long distance (long delay) circuit setup with layer 2 equipment (before trying to understand the behaviour of TCP on such a long delay link), performance measurements were done sending a single stream of 5000 UDP packets. The packets were sent with no delay and with varying length over a varying set of configurations.

The first set of configurations were a so called series of back to back connections between two machines inserting layer 2 equipment in the path between them. The second set involved the long distance optical (lambda) link between 'Netherlight' in Amsterdam and 'Starlight' in Chicago.

The results of the measurements can be seen here:

  1. Back to back configurations
  2. Configurations with the lambda between the end stations
  3. The influence of a delay between packets
  4. As comparison an end to end test over the regular Internet
