iGrid2005 Resource Coordination

iGrid2005 will be held at UCSD from Sep. 26 to Sep. 29 2005
Many Dutch resources, network and computing, will be used during this conference.
We have a separate page that deals with the usage tracking of the UvA/AIR resources (AIRResourcesScheduling2005)
In the following we deal with the general networking issues related to iGrid2005.

(Notes are in reverse order: most recent first)

Jun. 15 notes

Maxine has released a new document with the list of demos. From last time there are some new demos that use Dutch resources and some that have been retracted.
The following is the situation:

Apr. 22 notes

There is a new updated version of the iGrid 2005 demonstration submission document.
There are 8 new demos, none of them has new implication for the "Dutch side of things".
New demos are: CA102, CA103, CH101, JA103, KO101, MX101, SP101, US128
CA102, CA103, KO101, SP101 are related to CA101 for which we had already formulated our questions.
CH101, JA103, MX101, US128 are not using Dutch resources.

Mar. 14 meeting notes

Paola Grosso (UvA/AIR)
Pieter de Boer (SARA)

Network connectivity Netherlands - USA
The goal of this meeting is to asses what are the current requests for usage of Dutch resources.
We have started off drawing out the current network connectivity from Amsterdam/SURFnet to the Us.
We will need to lay out also the expected network status in September, at the time of the conference.
Pieter will work on a VISIO diagrams for both current and future network layout.

The following are few important and unclear points to investigate further, with SURFnet:

We have to drawing showing the current status of the network in the Netherlands:

Demo resource requests
A general issue with many demos is that it is not clear if they require routed path or are going to use dedicated lightpaths.
The following should be the questions to the demonstrators.

How will they reach the US from Spain? Over the OC-48 from GEANT?
If they need more bandwidth would they be coming from Spain to NetherLight and how? Over a routed path?
They have a path from CzechLight to StarLight via NetherLight. And they are requesting a similar path getting to LSU (Lousiana State University).
Is the LSU connection going via StarLight? What type of circuit in NetherLight do they need?
Which nodes in Amsterdam are they going to use? And do they need ports on the UvA Force10? WANPHY or/and LANPHY?
Note that currently 10Gig ports on the Force10 are scarse, but by summer we will have more ports.
Is this demo going to require a lightpath? We think so. We also think that is probably a "low" bandwidth (1 Gig) demo...This needs confirmation from the demonstrators.
We need confirmation that a routed path is fine for this demo. This is what they had worked with during SC2004.
Is a special connection to the Vrij Universiteit needed?
Is a routed connection on the Dutch side fine or we need special arrangements for this?
Pieter is going to check if there are available unused fibers between SARA and the Vrij Universiteit.
Same as US110 and US111.
They mention hardware to be placed at NetherLight. What hardware and what type of connection to NetherLight will they need?
They need to arrange an optical path to Amsterdam. Is this routed or a true lightpath?
Which nodes in Amsterdam will be used (a Rembrandt node connected to the UvA Force10)?
Which connection from Amsterdam to Geneva they plan to use?
Will the traffic from Geneva to the Us go via Amsterdam?
Same as US108 and US111
Same as US108 and US110
Is this routed path or a light path?
They request 10Gig from Amsterdam to the Us. Is this going to StarLight?
How much of the 10Gig is their application actually going to consume?
Is the path from Amsterdam to Chicago routed or a lightpath?
How much bandwidth is needed fon this path?
They want a SURFnet link from Amsterdam to Chicago. Does this mean this is over the routed network?
1.5 multicast traffic from Amsterdam to the US. We assume this means they are going to use the routed network. This needs confirmation.
What type of connection is expected between SARA and NCSA? Is this a lightpath?
Which cluster in Amsterdam is going to be used?
Which path (and is this routed or a true lightpath) is needed from Amsterdam to the Us?
Reading the demo description we believe they need 4gbps total. Is this correct?
What is the connection expected between StarLight and CzechLight, via NetherLight? Routed or lightpath?

Mar.14 to do list

The following link points to an Excel spreadsheet with all the information we have available on the demo somehow related to Amsterdam.
