At the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute for experimental physics, scientists perform research in the areas of quantum gases & quantum information, hard condensed matter, and soft matter. The WZI is a division of the Institute of Physics.

A modern university with a rich history, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) traces its roots back to 1632, when the Golden Age school Athenaeum Illustre was established to train students in trade and philosophy. The Institute of Physics (IoP) comprises all physics research at the University of Amsterdam.
It was founded in January 2011 as a merger of the Institute for Theoretical Physics Amsterdam (ITFA), the Institute for High Energy Physics (IHEF), and the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute for experimental physics (WZI).
