The gas holdup in a bubble column can be increased by application of low-frequency vibrations. At specific vibration frequencies and amplitudes, depending on the operating conditions, standing waves occur in the bubble column resulting in a break-up of the gas bubbles and an increase of the gas-liquid interface.
