Erik Verlinde ontvangt de NWO-Spinozapremie 2011

Theoretisch fysicus Erik Verlinde ontvangt de NWO-Spinozapremie 2011, de hoogste Nederlandse onderscheiding in de wetenschap. Dat heeft de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) op maandag 6 juni bekendgemaakt. De laureaat krijgt 2,5 miljoen euro, vrij te besteden aan onderzoek naar keuze. NWO kent de Spinozapremie toe aan Nederlandse onderzoekers die zowel nationaal als internationaal tot de absolute top van de wetenschap behoren. De wetenschappers ontvangen de prestigieuze premie voor hun voortreffelijk, baanbrekend en inspirerend onderzoek. De laureaten zijn internationaal vermaard en weten jonge onderzoekers te inspireren. In totaal worden er dit jaar drie Spinozapremies uitgereikt.

Theoretical physicist Erik Verlinde has received the NWO Spinoza Prize 2011, the highest scientific award in the Netherlands. This has been announced on monday June 6th by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The laureate receives 2.5 million euros to spend on research of his choice. The NWO awards the Spinoza Prize to Dutch researcherswho rank among both the Netherlands and the world's top scientists. The scientists receive the prestigious prize for their outstanding, groundbreaking and inspiring research. The winners are internationally renowned scientists and know how to inspire young researchers. Three Spinoza prizes were awarded.

Koninklijke onderscheiding voor UvA-natuurkundige Sander Bais

Prof. dr. Sander Bais, hoogleraar Theoretische Natuurkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), is benoemd tot Officier in de Orde van Oranje Nassau. Hij ontving de koninklijke onderscheiding op vrijdag 29 april uit handen van burgemeester Jan van Zanen van de gemeente Amstelveen, de woonplaats van Bais.

Bais ontvangt de koninklijke onderscheiding vanwege zijn bijzondere verdiensten voor de wetenschap en de samenleving. Hij heeft een indrukwekkende staat van dienst, als onderzoeker, docent en bestuurder binnen de academische wereld, maar ook als voorvechter van het
                                     maatschappelijk belang van de natuurwetenschappen.

Kostas Skenderis accepted the tenured position of full Professor of Theoretical Physics

Kostas Skenderis accepted the tenured position of full Professor of Theoretical Physics, with specialization in "Snaartheorie en de Quantumtheorie van de Zwaartekracht" in the Faculty of Science. The starting date of the appointment is March 1st 2011.

Sander Bais verkozen tot UvA Docent van het Jaar 2010

Tijdens de viering van de 379ste Dies Natalis van de UvA, 10 januari, maakte de juryvoorzitter bekend dat Sander Bais is verkozen tot UvA Docent van het Jaar 2010. De juryvoorzitter overhandigde de Gouden Stelten aan Sander Bais. Alleskunner Sander Bais belichaamt de wetenschap, slaat bruggen tussen disciplines, onderwijs en onderzoek, en verbindt docenten met studenten.

Over Sander Bais zegt de jury: 'Een alfa in bètakleren. Hij weet bèta’s, gamma’s en alfa’s te verbinden, de natuurwetenschappen van verschillende kanten te belichten en kennis van verschillende disciplines te verenigen. Dit resulteert in interactieve colleges waarbij studenten gestimuleerd worden kritische vragen te stellen.' De keuze is op hem gevallen, omdat Sander Bais een docent is die niet in een ivoren toren zit, maar student en docent verbindt. Hij slaat bruggen tussen verschillende wetenschappelijke disciplines en verliest de band tussen cultuur, maatschappij en wetenschap niet uit het oog.

VICI grant for Jean-Sébastien Caux

NWO has awarded a VICI grant to Jean-Sébastien Caux for his research project `Bethe liquids: a new way of tackling strong correlations in and out of equilibrium'. The research will be aimed at developing a reliable theory framework for strongly correlated condensed matter systems, with quantitative predictive power beyond the low-energy and equilibrium regimes. The methods will be applied to quantum dots and nanoscale devices, to cold atomic quantum gases and to quantum magnetism.

Pieter Zeeman prijs voor Shanna Haaker

Iedere twee jaar wordt de Pieter Zeemanprijs uitgeloofd aan de beste master scriptie in de natuurkunde aan de UvA van de voorafgaande twee jaar. Deze prijs is het initiatief van de gemeente Schouwen-Duiveland (waar Zeeman vandaan komt) en de Pieter Zeemanstichting. Dit jaar gaat de prijs naar Shanna Haaker, voor haar scriptie "Phase transitions between fractional quantum Hall states: a Bose condensation approach", die ze geschreven heeft onder begeleiding van Prof. Sander Bais aan het Instituut voor Theoretische Fysica Amsterdam. In de scriptie wordt ingegaan op het gedrag van electronen opgesloten in twee dimensies in een sterk magnetisch veld. In bepaalde omstandigheden kent dit systeem topologische excitaties. Zulke excitaties zijn veelbelovend als bits voor het opslaan van informatie in quantum commputers, omdat ze niet zomaar kunnen vervallen. Het onderzoek van Shanna Haaker heeft mede aanleiding gegeven tot een publicatie in de Physical Revier Letters. De prijs waaraan een geldbedrag is verbonden van 2500 Euro wordt uitgereikt op 26 november op de school Pontes Pieter Zeeman in Zierikzee.

Pieter Zeeman Prize for Shaana Haaker Shanna Haaker has won the Pieter Zeeman prize for the best master thesis in physics of the University of Amsterdam of the last two academic years. The Pieter Zeeman Prize, in honour of the second ever Nobel laureate in physics (jointly with Hendrik A. Lorentz). The prize is the initiative of the municipality Schouwen Duiveland, where Zeeman was born and raised, together with the Pieter Zeeman foundation. It is awarded every two years. The prize is awarded traditionally in the school of Pieter Zeeman in Zierikzee, now named Pontes Pieter Zeeman. Shanna did her research with Prof. Sander Bais, at the Institute for Theoretical Physics Amsterdam, on properties of the phases and phase boundaries in a Quantum Hall system. A Quantum Hall system is a two dimensional conductor with a current flowing through it, in a strong magnetic field perpendicular on the plane of the conductor. The combination generates a transversal electric field of which the strength is quantized. Certain excitations in this system are promising candidates for qubits, the elemental units of information in a Quantum Computer. Shanna's work led to a publication in the prestigeous journal Physical Review Letters.

Shell stipendia for ITFA Master Students

The Governing Board of the Dutch Research School of Theoretical Physics (DRSTP) has nominated 11 MSc students for a Shell Stipend for Theoretical Physics 2010. For ITFA the laureates are Evert Bosdriesz, Jason Dekdebrun, Lucas Ellerbroek and Bart Verouden. With these stipends, to be awarded each year to the best Master's students in Theoretical Physics, Shell intends to draw attention to future career possibilities for graduates in international companies such as Shell. The stipend, worth Euro 2,000 will be granted to the students in an award ceremony at the Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam (STCA), Grasweg 31 on Wednesday, 8 December 2010 at 15:30h.

FOM programme on 1D electrons

FOM will start a new research programme on `the singular physics of 1D electrons'. ITFA's J.-S. Caux and WZI's Mark Golden are part of this programme. Both have been awarded a PhD position.

University support for GRAPPA

The College van Bestuur of the University of Amsterdam has selected GRAPPA (centre for Gravity and Astroparticle Physics Amsterdam) as a new University center of excellence. This new status brings additional funding and will enable GRAPPA to realize its ambitious investment agenda.

ERC Advanced Grand for Erik Verlinde

The European Research Council has awarded an ERC Advanced Grant to Erik Verlinde, for his research project Emergent Gravity, String Theory and the Holographic Principle. The ERC review panel praises Erik Verlinde for "an outstanding record in a large number of aspects of string theory" and for his recent ideas on quantum gravity, which they deem "one of the most original and promising suggestions made in this field in the last decade".

NWO has granted a VENI grant to Balazs Pozsgai for his research project 'Thermal correlations in one dimensional quantum systems'

Balazs Pozsgai will study the interplay of thermal effects and quantum fluctuations in strongly interacting one-dimensional many-body systems. The methods will include field theoretical approaches and numerical simulations, with a special aim of providing phenomenology for experiments with ultracold gases.

UvA ‘Projectruimte subsidie (FOM) toegekend aan UvA-wetenschappers'

Vanwege het veelbelovende karakter van hun natuurkunde onderzoek wijst FOM aan de UvA-Wetenschappers: Peter Schall, R.J.C. Spreeuw, E.P.Verlinde en J. de Boer, Projectruimte subsidies toe.
