Welcome to the SCS WWW pages

The Section Computational Science is one of the research groups in the Computing, System Architecture and Programming Laboratory (CSP) of the University of Amsterdam. The SCS studies the computational problems in the area of complex dynamical systems. Important aspects of this research are
  • the understanding of multi-scale phenomena, where systems are studied over large temporal and spatial scales, and
  • the mapping of complex systems onto high performance parallel and distributed computing systems.
In our research we concentrate on the study of the intrinsic computational properties of cellular automata, the use of (virtual) particles in modelling natural processes and the discovery and application of "natural solvers". The Polder Computing Environment is concerned with the optimal mapping of the resulting models onto parallel computer systems.

Honorary doctorate for Grid-inventor Kesselman

Carl Kesselman - co-inventor of grid technology - was awarded an honorary doctorate by the UvA at the "dies natalis" - the celebration of the university foundation year on 9 January 2006.

Assessment of Computer Science Research in the Netherlands

In 2003/2004 an international committee of renowned scientists gave an assessment of the Computer Science research in the Netherlands. Follow this link for their report.
