Atomic giants shuffle tiny lights: non-linear optics with Rydberg atoms

Our work focuses on exploiting the strongly interacting character of Rydberg atoms for non-linear optics [1-3] with the aim of realizing a robust quantum interface to control single photons. We will describe elements of the atom-light interaction such as the Kerr [2] and Faraday effect [4] in the context single photon phase gates and fast read-out.
