Nanosilicon: new properties - new functionality

We will demonstrate that Si at nanoscale has entirely new properties due to morphological and quantum size effects: variable energies of excitons having well-defined spin structures, highly aligned nanocrystalline network and large accessible surface area. These features result in new emerging functionalities of nanosilicon.
A few novel application areas of silicon nanocrystal assemblies will be discussed:
- photosensitization of oxygen molecules
- silicon-based passive optical elements
- nanosilicon-based explosives
