Tailored quantum systems with ultra cold atomic gases

By combining atomic Bose and Fermi gases with optical or magnetic micro potentials novel quantum systems can be tailored. As an example, miniaturized magnetic traps offer interesting perspectives of integrated matter wave optics on a micro chip. In recent experiments the basic properties of such Micro Traps have been investigated and now first diffraction of Bose-Einstein condensates from an integrated magnetic lattice has been observed. Latest results are reviewed and an outlook is given for similar experiments also with fermionic atoms and for coupled systems of Bose-Einstein condensates with optical modes and with macroscopic wave functions of Cooper pairs in a superconductor.
