Dutch Scientific Societies and Research Institutes
- KNAW - As the forum, conscience, and voice of the arts and sciences in the Netherlands, the Academy promotes the quality of scientific and scholarly work and strives to ensure that Dutch scholars and scientists make the best possible contribution to the cultural, social, and economic development of Dutch society
- NISB - NISB develops and exploits systems biology tools and approaches to investigate complex biological systems and unravel their underlying principles.
Biological systems are approached as networks of molecules, cells, tissues and organisms that interact in time and space. This is achieved through excellent research and by amalgamating biological and biomedical sciences with chemistry, physics, mathematics, informatics and engineering
- NVvM - The Society aims to promote the knowledge of and interest in microbiology in The Netherlands and Flanders. The Society and its seven divisions organise symposia in several microbiological disciplines
- TNO - TNO is an independent research organisation whose expertise and research make an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organisations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. TNO’s unique position is attributable to its versatility and capacity to integrate this knowledge
- VWA - The task of the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority is to protect human and animal health. It monitors food and consumer products to safeguard public health and animal health and welfare. The Authority controls the whole production chain, from raw materials and processing aids to end products and consumption

University ranking
- University of Groningen Ranking Method
Rationale
There are a number of well known rankings and ranking methodologies. For all of these, the publication and citation data of the ISI serve as a more or less important input. Next, various modifications have been applied, like numbers of scientific awards, size of institutions etc (in Shanghai ranking) or a very large influence is given to peer opinions, numbers of international students etc (in Times Higher Education ranking). There is a tendency with the public and administrators to interpret these rankings as a reflection of the scientific quality of institutions. However, especially peer opinion is determined to a large extent by how well known a university is, or in many instances, the city where this university is located. Non existing programs at well known universities are known to have received high peer rankings and universities without any significant research output appear in these rankings. On the other hand, a number of strong research universities are not represented in the Times Higher Education ranking due to various reasons.
The University of Groningen Ranking is intended to provide insight in which universities have a significant output in a number of scientific fields and have a Citation per Paper ratio that is well above the world average.
Methodology
- Data were taken directly from Essential Science Indicators (October 2006).
- Institutions with at least 18,500 publications over the past 10 years were selected.
- Ranking was based on Citations/Paper as an indicator of quality.
- A small number of institutions, like NCI, Veterans Administration Center and the Max Planck Society, do not qualify as research universities and were excluded from this list. The ranking of the European universities is indicated in blue.
- Times Higher Education - QS World University Ranking Method
Ranking Criteria and Weights
We rank universities by several indicators of academic or research performance, including academic peer review, recruiter review, student faculty ratio, citations per faculty member, proportion of international faculty and proportion of international students. We may introduce additional criteria in the future subject to availability.
| Criteria | Indicator | Brief Description | Weight* |
| Research Quality | Peer Review | Composite score drawn from peer review (which is divided into five subject areas). 3,703 responses. | 40% |
| Citations per Faculty | Score based on research performance factored against the size of the research body | 20% | |
| Graduate Employability | Recruiter Review | Score based on responses to recruiter survey. 738 responses | 10% |
| International Outlook | International Faculty | Score based on proportion of international faculty | 5% |
| International Students | Score based on proportion of international students | 5% | |
| Teaching Quality | Student Faculty | Score based on student/faculty ratio | 20% |
* Weights are decided upon by the Times Higher Education Supplement
For each indicator, the highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. The distribution of data for each indicator is examined for any significant distorting effect; standard statistical techniques are used to adjust the indicator if necessary.
Scores for each indicator are weighted as shown below to arrive at a final overall score for an institution. The highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. An institution's rank reflects the number of institutions that sit above it.
Websites of Universities - Highschools (worldwide)
Since 2004, the Ranking Web is published twice a year (January and July), covering more than 20,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide. We intend to motivate both institutions and scholars to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities.
