Pension

Through your employment at the UvA, you build up pension entitlement in The Netherlands.

Your pension fund is ABP. ABP is the pension fund for employers and employees in service of the Dutch government and the educational sector.

You are required to pay contributions towards different types of pension at ABP. Some contributions are compulsory (Multi-Option Pension, Retirement Pension, Surviving Dependants Pension, Incapacity Pension), some optional (Extra Pension, Life insurance for the insurer, Partner Plus Pension, Incapacity insurance for the insurer).

You and your employer pay monthly contributions for ABP pensions. Your employer will deduct your contribution from your salary, before tax is deducted. Each year, you receive a pension statement from ABP showing how much pension entitlement you have built up until that date.

If you have already built up a pension entitlement elsewhere, you can choose to transfer your old pension to ABP. This is known as a value transfer. It is only possible with the co-operation of your previous pension insurer.

If you leave the Netherlands, you can leave your pension with ABP. In some cases and subject to certain conditions, you can transfer your pension to a new pension insurer abroad. This is known as an international value transfer.

If you prefer to leave your pension in the care of ABP, you will receive an old age pension at the age of 65. ABP will inform you from time to time about your pension eligibility. As such you must inform ABP of your emigration and keep ABP updated on addresses and other changes in your personal situation such as marriage, divorce, death etc.
