Zoological Museum Amsterdam
Darwin Year 2009
Exhibitions on Darwin at the ZMA
The main exhibition focuses on the general importance of Charles Darwin's contributions to science. Scientists as well as non-scientists are featured in the moving media elements, surrounded by the artfully lit preparations illustrating where Darwin's and Linnaeus' work meet.
Next to this, all throughout the Darwin Year, there will be a walking route through the Artis Museum. This stroll offers a fascinating look at Darwin's theory of evolution. All elements of the separate Darwin exhibitions are included, with the living specimens residing in the zoo making the most spectacular illustrations.
Amongst these animals are the big cats. For the Darwin year a special display has been made: From Leopard to Lynx, clarifying all the branches of evolutionary development that this family of extra-ordinary hunters has gone through over the ages.
The part of the exhibition the ZMA is particularly proud of consists of the collection of Darwin's letters to the Artis Zoo all those years ago. In his correspondence with the scientists he asks a number of questions, the answers to which were included in his work on sexual selection.
