Texel Conference "The Moduli Space of Abelian Varieties"

Organizers

The conference will be held on Texel Island during the week April 25-29, 1999. We expect between 40 and 50 participants. We have invited leading international experts in this field but we also stimulate that young researchers take part. As the title indicates the moduli spaces of abelian varieties (in a broad sense) form the central theme including the geometric and arithmetic aspects.
This conference can be seen as a sequel to the highly successful conferences ``Arithmetic Algebraic Geometry" and "The Moduli Space of Curves" which were held on Texel in 1989 and 1994 (Cf. 'Arithmetic Algebraic Geometry', Eds. G. van der Geer, F. Oort and J. Steenbrink, Progress in Math 89, Birkh\"auser Verlag (1991)) and 'The Moduli Space of Curves', Eds. R. Dijkgraaf, C. Faber and G. van der Geer, Progress in Math 129, Birkh\"auser Verlag (1996)).
Texel Island is an island lying north of the mainland of Holland in the North Sea. The hotel where the conference will take place is located in the dunes near the sea. It is our intention that there will be ample time and opportunity for informal discussions.

Further Information

  • 1. Participants are expected to arrive on Sunday afternoon April 25 at the place where the conference will be held : Hotel Opduin in the village De Koog on Texel Island. The conference will finish on Thursday April 29 around 4 p.m. There will be a dinner at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Some participants may wish to stay longer at the hotel after the closure of the conference. Please inform us about your wishes.
  • 2. A number of participants shall be invited to give a talk. It is not our intention that a majority of participants gives a talk. The program will be decided a month or so before the conference. We wish to avoid a heavy program with too many talks and prefer to leave ample opportunity for informal discussions.
  • 3. The lecture hall is equipped with blackboards and overhead projectors. The hotel offers many facilities: besides standard things like fax and the possibility to make photocopies there is a tennis court, swimming pool, sauna, table tennis etc. The hotel is situated in the dunes, at 150 meters from the sea. There are many possibilities on the island for walking and bicycling. (You can rent bicycles near the hotel.)

Travel information: how to get from Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport) to the hotel on Texel:
  • !!!
  • Warning: If you intend to spend one or more nights in Amsterdam, before or after the conference on Texel Island, please let the organizers know immediately if you cannot arrange it yourself. Arranging hotel reservations for these nights is usually difficult (in particular because of Queens Day, see below).
  • Friday April 30 is "Queens Day". The birthday of our queen (January 31) is celebrated on this day. This day many people from outside Amsterdam will visit Amsterdam. There will be a lot of activity in the streets with music bands playing on every corner. Recently, about one million people visited Amsterdam (pop. 650.000) on this day. It goes without saying that this puts a strain on the transport infrastructure. If you are leaving on April 30 you must take this into account.
  • The weather: it is not unreasonable to expect maximum temperatures at Texel of between 15 and 20 degrees centigrade. According to the Dutch proverb "April doet wat hij wil" April weather can be capricious. Often there are strong winds at Texel. For certain walks rubber boots can be useful.
