Johnny Cash was almost a guest (refer BBYNHIYL). ------------ Note 2a: ------------ >Here's a question that I don't think I've ever seen an answer to, but >maybe I just missed it. Did the '88 band ever play the "Beatles Medley" >without the Swaggart lyrics? No. Those songs were all Swaggart-as-written There are versions of both Norwegian Wood and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds with normal Beatles lyrics and which are played independently (no medley here). My tape is labelled The Royal Oak Theatre, Detroit, Michigan Feb. 27, 1988. Royal Oak, Michigan is my home town and the Royal Oak Theater is in downtown Royal Oak (I can hear a friend of mine talking at the beginning of Promiscuous, he was near the stage). Royal Oak is a suburb of Detroit, it is about 2 miles from Detroit's north border. I've seen these three (Feb. 26,27&28, 1988) shows labeled Detroit, Troy and Royal Oak, Michigan. Troy is the next suburb to the north of Royal Oak and was mentioned in the beginning of each show during voter registration. For some reason the laws of the area would only allow Frank to register voters from Troy. Because of this I've seen the tape labeled 'Royal Oak Music Theater, Troy, Michigan'. To make a long story short... These shows should be labeled,'Royal Oak Music Theater, Royal Oak, Michigan'. There are Swaggart versions of songs on TBBYNHIYL that were performed "straight" at many of the shows. I prefer the non-swag '88 version of Torture Never Stops/Lonesome Cowboy Burt. Another '88 obscurity: TBBYNHIYL has a version of Heavy Duty Judy that is a nice instrumental, however there is a version from one of the US shows where Frank reads Ed Meese transcripts. Presumably from his trial/indictment/hearing or whatever. The Version dubbed "Heavy Duty Ed Meese" is really good and I'm surprised Frank didn't release that one. ------------- Note 2b: ------------- >I heard a rumor that this medley was first performed in Detroit during >the 88 tour. Chicago was supposed to be the premiere of the Swaggart >lyrics. Try to find the Detroit tapes to confirm. Contributor unknown: I was at the show at the Royal Oak Theatre in late February, 1988. I do remember clearly the Beatles medley. I was just coming off my stint as a Beatleologist at the time, so I was still intrigued by how they approached it (I probably wouldn't be now). I also remember that when they did "Promiscuous", Frank had said that it was written two days before at a hotel (I seem to remember he said Chicago). The song was new enough for Ike to be reading the lyrics from what appeared to be a loose-leaf sheet of paper. The other main thing I remember about that show was that it is the last concert I've ever seen that had three encores. In fact, the gap between encores two and three was long enough to empty out at least half the crowd. God, I miss him. >From Jon Naurin Facts: Norwegian Wood and Lucy in the Sky were performed with original lyrics on Feb 27. The very next concert, Feb. 28, the Texas Motel Medley (Swaggart-lyrics) was premiered. Both shows were at Royal Oak Theatre. ------------ Note 2c: ------------ I saw FZ in Syracuse NY on March 15 (my 33rd birthday). The performance was truly unbelievable; but when the band played the Beatles medley ... WHOA! Did FZ ever release this prodigious parody? No. Good old Mickie Jackson has the rights, and given FZ's rather unkind treatment of the "King of Pop" it is unlikely that the ZFT will get permission to release it. PS: as far as I know they were in Portland ME on March 15. They played Syracuse on Mar 21. (MB) ------------- Note 2d: ------------- >> Has anybody transcribed the Beatles medley that Frank and band >> did at some shows during the 1988 tour? >I think I've got them around here somewhere. I'll go look now! Couldn't find it. Had to do it over. (disk/drive problems lately) >From the Rochester War Memorial, Rochester, NY, March 11, 1988. [The Texas Motel Medley] Norwegian Jim (Norwegian Wood) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jim... once had a girl, or should we say, she once had he. She... showed him her room, isn't it swell, Texas Motel. She asked him to stay and she told him to sit anywhere. So Jim looked around and he noticed there wasn't a prayer. Jim... took off his rug, biding his time, pounding his pud. He... prayed until two, and then she said, "How 'bout some head?" She said she was booked in the morning with Falwell and Pat. Jim told her he wasn't, and dribbled some spoo in her lap. And... when he awoke, he was alone, she'd honed his cone. So... he let her fly, isn't it swell, Texas Motel But then, suddenly... Louisiana Hooker with Herpes (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Picture yourself with a whore in New Orleans, with big purple welts, all over her bod. Somebody calls and you answer quite slowly. It's the board from Assembly O' God.* Ignorant crackers like you've never seen, groveling under your bed. Look for the girl with the spoo in her lap, and she's gone! Louisiana hooker with herpes. Louisiana hooker with herpes. Louisiana hooker with herpes. Owwww! We saw her go down to a room by the airport, where Jimmy gets off watching pornography. Everyone smiles as we tread through his horseshit, that grows so incredibly high. Newspaper writers appear at his door, waiting to take Jim away. He climbs in the back with his head up his ass, and he's gone! Louisiana hooker with herpes. [everybody!] Louisiana hooker with herpes. Louisiana hooker with herpes. Owwww! Picture yourself on your own TV station, with brain-dead supporters with tears in their eyes. Suddenly someone is there at commercial, the girl with the pee-hole surprise. Louisiana hooker with herpes. [c'mon now!] Louisiana hooker with herpes. Louisiana hooker with herpes. Owwww! Ow! Louisiana hooker with herpes. Louisiana hooker with herpes. Louisiana hooker with herpes. Owwww! Ow! * The "Assembly Of God" must be the televangelist church that Jim was fronting for. The board probably has the power to replace Jim if he fucks up (Missionary position is OK since he's fucking down ;^) . The Texas Motel (Strawberry Fields) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Let me take you down, 'cause we're going to... the Texas Motel. Don't mind the smell. It's nothing to get hung about. Please leave your cash on the table. Weeping looks better with eyes closed... While I'm confessing all my sins. [Oh, please forgive me. Oh, I've sinned!] It's getting hard to plook someone, but it all works out. It's all pornography to Jim. Let me take you down, 'cause we're going to... the Texas Motel. We might go to hell. But we'll have lots of company. Falwell and Pat and that weasel. No one knows who's in my dream... [Bud McFarlane, ladies & gentlemen] I mean it must be high or low. (I think) [freshly indicted] I mean, I can't you know, tune in, but it's all right. [He can plea bargain this one] That is, I think it's not too bad. Let me take you down, 'cause we're going to... the Texas Motel. Don't mind the smell. It's just some jizz from Jimmy-boy. How 'bout some hay for the donkey? No one knows, sometimes think it's me... [Ed Meese, ladies & gentlemen] But you know, I know when it's a dream. [I think] I think I know, I mean, I guess, but it's all wrong. [Wait a minute, that's right] That is, I think I disagree. [Uhh...] Let me take you down, 'cause we're going to... the Texas Motel. Don't mind the smell. It's just some old pornography. Just keep on strokin' that sausage. Just keep on strokin' that sausage. [Jimmy-boy!] Just keep on strokin' that sausage. ----------- Note 3: ----------- The accepted story as to why Ray White didn't tour with FZ in 1988 is that they had started rehearsals when Ray had a phone call that his house had been burgled. He went off to check it out and didn't return. In the interim, enter Mike Keneally, who was told that if Ray didn't re-appear, he could have the job in the tour band. And the rest is history. Ray got in touch with Ike shortly after the tour started. Better late than never, I guess. Actually, in an interview with Frank, I read that the reason that Ray wasn't in the group was because he was religious and took offence at some of Zappa's music. ------------ Note 4: ------------ >I listened to a tape with rehearsals : flo and Eddy were joining in. I wonder if this was something serious, or were they just jamming for fun. I read somewhere that Flo and Eddy didn't want to jeopardize their new career by joining FZ in 88. The songs they rehearsed were different from those on the playlists. Around December 1987/January 1988, Flo and Eddie did rehearse with the band but decided it was in their best newly re-created image of cleanliness (Turtles retro gigs and kiddie show music) that they not sing Zappa lyrics again. [BL] Lantz' information was essentially correct, except that Flo & Eddie didn't rehearse with the band in December and January; I got there in October '87, and by that time F & E had already come and gone. [MK] --------------- Note 5: --------------- >>I never heard of "It Ain't Necessarily So" >It is the Gershwin tune from "Porgy And Bess," combined with the >blues standard "St. James Infirmiary" to make "It Ain't Necessarily The >St. James Infirmiary", the last track on the CD. That performance was >from '82, though - interesting to see that this survived in FZ's >repertoire. (Contributor unknown) The '88 band performed It Ain't Necessarily So at the Feb 10th, Warner Theater, Washington D.C., early show, with NPR's Daniel Shore singing lead! The band also played a little bit of Oh Danny Boy as Mr. Shore made his way onto the stage. Following this, they played a small portion of Summertime, followed by the Royal March From Aida. A truly unique concert. ------------ Note 6: ------------ >All well and good, but can anyone enlighten a non-US citizen (and >forgive him if this has been addressed here before) as to who exactly >is Brother A West? Is he for real?? When I first heard the album, I >couldn't make up my mind - would such a person really take the stage >with FZ? Or is this a case of "Only in America..."? A. West is the artist who illustrated BWTHW and _The Real Frank Zappa Book_. I was at the Feb 14 concert in question -- it was clearly a put-on, but after the intermission FZ had to spill the beans and ask some of the less perceptive of us not to give poor Brother West a hard time if we ran into him after the concert. Also: Brother A. West performed at the Mar 25 show in Nassau NY. (MB) ---------- Note 7: ---------- ivester@utkvx.utk.edu (Stan Ivester) wrote: I ran across this article at some educational site. There was no copyright notice attached, so I'm reposting it here without trying to obtain permission. It has some inaccuracies, but still it's nice to see some attention given to FZ's work by someone other than hopeless lifers like myself. Comedic Crap Detection: Frank Zappa's "Broadway The Hard Way" by Tony Palmeri Described by the "Guinness Encyclopedia of Popular Music" (1992) as a "sophisticated, serious composer... with a remarkable sense of humor" (p. 2770), the late Frank Zappa added a comic touch to a collection of issue-oriented songs released in 1988 as "Broadway The Hard Way." With biting satire throughout, the album takes on America's obsession with cultural icons ("Elvis Has Just Left The Building"), shallow executives ("Planet of the Baritone Women"), Madison Avenue exploitation of women ("Any Kind Of Pain"), Republican party lies and liars ("Dickie's Such An Asshole"; "When The Lie's So Big"; "The Untouchables"), Jesse Jackson as a "naughty Democrat" ("Rhymin' Man"), the AIDS mystery ("Promiscuous"), Michael Jackson's inflated ego ("Why Don't You Like Me"), government opposition to Zappa's political activities ("Bacon Fat"), double standards in prostitution prosecution ("Jezebel Boy"), twisted music industry executives ("Outside Now"), homelessness ("Hot-Plate Heaven At The Green Hotel"), and the hypocrisy of television preachers ("What Kind Of Girl"; "Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk"). Rock singer Sting also joins the band for a performance of the Jimmy Swaggart condemned "Murder By Numbers." As a whole, the lyrical content of the songs reveal Zappa as one of the great "comedic crap detectors" in the tradition of Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, and Dick Gregory. Zappa's music adds a dimension to his message not found in the straight comedy of the entertainers mentioned above. ---------- Note 8: ---------- Spencer Chrislu said in response to the question, "On the upcoming release of Trance-Fusion, which 88 concerts comprise the recording?": "...I really don't remember what bits FZ used on Trance-Fusion. I mixed bunches and bunches of guitar solos, and then turned them over to Frank. He then spent hours and hours putting things together and then taking them apart. I'll leave it to all of you guys to dissect what bits came from where." ========================================== SELF-DESTRUCTION - WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED? ========================================== >In the liner notes to BBYNHIYL, Frank writes >"The 1988 road band self-destructed before U.S. audiences in the >South, Midwest and West could hear it perform." >I'm curious as to what this refers to. Any one got an answer? ------------------ >From Stu Mark This is my take on it (meaning, not to be taken internally): Apparently Mr. Scott Thunes (a fine bass player and damn funny on-stage persona) was appointed to lead rehearsals while Mr. Zappa was out of the room. Mr. Thunes was very much into thorough rehearsals and possibly got a bit overzealous in his attempt to cull perfection out of the rest of the band. After awhile the band kinda gave up on Mr. Thunes and starting expressing their feelings of frustration in less than professional ways: (one example is when there was some sort of celebration requiring a cake. This cake had everyone's name on it. Before the cake was displayed, some of the members of the band removed the section of the cake with Scott's name on it.) This kind of business went on for quite a bit, prompting a vote as to whether Mr. Thunes should stay in the band. Everyone voted Mr. Thunes out of the band, save Mr. Keneally. Frank heard of this voting incident and decided that he'd had enough. (this is just my version of the story as I heard it, so hopefully Mr. Keneally will provide us with his story.) personally, I think that kind of crap is a damn shame. It's not like Thunes was doing heroin or some other distractive bullshit. He was trying to do his job... what a fucking shame... >From Mike Keneally The following is extracted (with permission) from http://www.moosenet.com/keneally.html "The seeds of dissolution were sown during pre-tour rehearsals in L.A. When Frank was off in the early part of the day doing interviews or whatever, it would be [bassist Scott] Thunes' job to rehearse the band. Scott has a way of expressing dissatisfaction which is not particularly tactful. Simply put, if someone hadn't learned their part properly, Scott was a pain in the ass. But as I saw it, all he cared about was the band knowing their stuff, and he wasn't trying to make friends in the process, which I respected, and we became good friends during this phase. "Most of the other guys in the band (who were older than Scott, and jazz musicians to boot) didn't wish to have Scott in their face all the time, which I can respect in retrospect---Scott truly is a pain in the ass at times, which at least partly explains why he isn't in Z anymore (although that was more of a mutual decision---Scott wanted out as much anyone wanted him gone). "Ed Mann was the one who really had the problem with Scott at first, and during the course of the tour the other guys in the band started to see things his way. Somewhere in the East Coast there was a band meeting where everyone told Frank of the problems they were having with Scott. Scott himself was not warned beforehand---the first time he heard anything of the burgeoning anti-Scott movement was during this meeting. He resented the "ganging-up" taking place without anyone confronting him personally before calling a big old band meeting and bringing Frank into it. "Scott was pretty annoyed from that point on, and little acts of terrorism began to be perpetrated against him by anonymous disgruntled people - someone got his laminated pass and scratched his face off, and on a big cake that had been provided for us by some promoter, which featured the names of all the band members, someone destroyed Scott's little cake section. (That night on stage Frank referred to "Playground psychotics!" in connection to these futile acts of vandalism.) "Finally, during the European leg, Frank asked everyone in the band, separately, if they would consent to doing the remaining 10 or so weeks of the tour, which would have covered the West Coast and various points inward, if Scott was in the band. Everyone except me said no. Obviously they assumed that the result of this attempted hijack would be the hiring of a new bassist. Frank said "fuck that" and sacked everybody. "There is the magic story of the death of the best band you never heard in your life." (ed. Note: thanks to MK for permission to reprint this) Discussion between Dave Randolph mprophet@airmail.net and Manning Bartlett Dave - Anyway, relating to the story of the "self-destruction" of the band & the whole Scott Thunes thing, I don't know if you've ever noticed but toward the end of "Lonesome Cowboy Burt (Swaggart version)" [BBYNHIYL] in the last chorus the words go something like: He's lonesome cowboy Jim (and someone distinctly yells "Scott!" in the left channel) Dontcha dare to laugh at him ("Scott!!") Sounds like some kind of animosity to me. Must have been tough for him to hold it together. Manning - You are absolutely right, in fact the second time it sounds like "smot" as in Scott-smot" which could arguably be perceived as derogatory. However as far as I know the song was recorded Feb 25, Pittsburgh. That doesn't discount your theory, but it may have been a little early for the animosities to have truly ripened (although there were the 4 months of rehearsals which Scott supervised). Dave - I think you are right about the "smot". One question... I'm not familiar w/"smot" as a word per-say. I could take a guess, though. Any offical meaning? Manning - None that I know of. [Ed. Note - Anyone else?] >From Pat Buzby spb0377@alpha.cc.oberlin.edu In the version of "King Kong" from Allentown, PA on March 19, Ed Mann did a monologue during his solo which was a barely-disguised diatribe about Scott. Don't know of any other onstage evidence of the problem, and certainly no blatant ones that made it onto official releases. ================ THE SECRET WORDS ================ This information is courtesy of Jon Naurin Located at the FZ Trader's homepage is Jon's amazing record of a vast number of individual shows FZ performed between the 1960's and 1988. Extremely highly recommended. http://www.frontiernet.net/~prem/fztrade.htm (MK) refers to explanations provided by Mike Keneally, guitarist/keyboardist on the tour. Washington, 8,9-Feb Secret Word: "Confinement Loaf" Comment: Explained on "Broadway the Hard Way" LP Philadelphia, 14-Feb Secret Word: "Bubbles the Chimp", "The Love Boat" Comment: Bubbles is Michael Jackson's best friend; a chimp. The Love Boat became secret word after Chad Wackerman had sung the song on request from Den Simms in the audience. Hartford, 16-Feb Secret Word: "Tuna(fish)" Comment: Some guys in the audience handed Frank a can of tunafish at the beginning of the show. With it was a note: "Hi Frank. We have an old custom in Framingham, Ma, of giving a tuna can to the guy in the van, or in your case, the band, who hasn't got laid in the longest period of time. He must sit with the can throughout the duration of the ride, or in your case, the concert, so he may receive full gratification and satisfaction, knowing the end is near. Please take our bag and distribute." The can was given to Harry, the audio mixer. Boston, 19-Feb Secret Words: "Thing-Fish"/"Galoot Colog-nuh" Comment: Maybe not intended to be the secret word(s), but get a lot of mentions. Boston, 20-Feb Secret Word: "Just the Tip" Comment: This was the show after the news "Jimmy Swaggart under investigation" as heard on "Jazz Noise". Frank wondered what "the sex act wasn't fully consummated" really meant, maybe did he stick in "just the tip" (or in Al Malkin's words: "just the helmet") - Jimmy Swaggart was then the secret word, or "theme" throughout the February concerts. Chicago, 4-Mar, Cleveland, 5-Mar Secret Word: "Llama" Comment: Derived from a sample that Ed Mann did of Frank imitating Willie Nelson singing "mama" (a la "Mama, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys"), which Ed inserted liberally into the concerts, and which Frank eventually vocally mutated into "llama". Hear "What Kind Of Girl" for a usage thereof. (MK) Might also have something to do with Michael Jackson's pet Llama, related to the lore of the origins of the Ziphilis (Siphillis came from Spanish sailors taking liberties with Llamas). Burlington, 12-Mar, Springfield, 13-Mar Secret Word: "Eric Buxton" Comment: Known as "Mr Regular" to the band, Eric attended most of the shows in the US. Some jokes about his shoes/boots, which apparently were huge. Portland, 15-Mar Secret Word: "Stainless the Maiden" Comment: At the beginning of the show, Frank recieved a devotional songbook with, among many songs, the hymn "Stainless the Maiden", which Robert Martin sang/played, sight reading. Binghampton, 17-Mar Secret Word: "Training Exercise" Comment: In reference to "Operation Golden Pheasant", war games the US was jointly conducting with Honduras in that country along their border to Nicaragua. Allentown, 19-Mar, Teaneck, 20-Mar, Syracuse, 21-Mar Secret Word: "Golden Pheasant" Comment: See 17-Mar Frankfurt, 13-Apr Secret Word: "Bruce Fowler" Comment: Starts out when Frank introduces the band with pompous adjectives (e.g "the marginally incomprehensible Mike Keneally"), but can't find any for the trombone player. Cologne, 14-Apr Secret Word: "Sheep", "mutton", "shepherd", "sodomy"... Comment: ???? Wurzburg, 22-Apr Secret word: "Ring of Fire" Comment: Explained on "Best Band..." Bremen, 24-Apr Secret Words: "Xenakis", "mbl, mbl" (the sound caused when you use your voice while brushing one finger over your lips) Comment: Yannis Xenakis is a greek composer, for whom Frank has expressed admiration. Copenhagen, 25-Apr Secret Word: "Airhose", "Falcum" Comment: An airhose was broken in one of the touring buses, causing trouble with the air conditioning, which in combination with the phonetical similarities with the danish town Aarhus was the reason to the secret word. Falcum is John Smothers' pronouncation of the arena they played in, Falkoner Theater. "Falcum, take me to the Falcum". Lund, 26-Apr Secret Word: "Hoonna Haenna Hoonna" Comment: Frank's all purpose representation of the beautiful swedish language. Oslo, 27-Apr Secret Words: "Sausage"/"Fornebu" Comment: Sausage is pronounced in John Smothers fashion "schaushage". Fornebu is Oslo's airport, I guess the band liked the phonetics of the name. There was a dog act which Frank saw on TV. The dog was touted as a talking dog. This was achieved by the dog's trainer grabbing the hapless canine somewhere near the balls and squeezing, at which point the dog emitted a grunting noise which sounded vaguely similar to "schaushage". Frank's description of this event to the band was VERY fucking funny. (MK) Helsinki 29-Apr Secret Word: "Reindeer" Comment: Earlier, somebody in the band or crew had been offered reindeer at a restaurant. (MK) Stockholm, 1-May Secret Words: "Dragonmaster", "Fernando" Comment: DragonMaster is the name of a spoof heavy-metal song FZ was working on. I think later Dweezil recorded it but only used his Dad's lyrics. We did record it, in fact it turned out wonderfully. We played it live a couple of times also. I hope DZ releases it someday. The music was all new, and some new lyrics were written as well (by AZ). (MK) Fernando, of course since they played in Abba's homecountry. Rotterdam, 3-May Secret Word: "Fishbone", coughing noises Comment: Obviously Robert "Fishbone in his throat today" Martin had choked on a fishbone during the flight from Scandinavia. Rotterdam, 4-May Secret Word: "Rehearsal", stuttering Comment: Frank was unhappy with the band's performance at the actual show, and this was his way of saying more rehearsal was required. (MK) Munich, 9-May Secret words: Mudshark and jazz noises - ayeee! Comment: The legend of the mudshark can be heard on "Fillmore East '71". The jazz noises are in reference to jazz pianist Errol Garner who mumbles in this manner along with what he plays. Barcelona, 17-May Secret Word: "Raffle", "Hooker" Comment: At a large dinner the day before, the touring party had some sort of raffle where the winner would have one of the dancing girls/hookers. Monitor engineer Marque Coy (Marqueson) won, but never got the girl. Montpellier, 18-May Secret Word: "Jewelery" Comment: ???? Grenoble, 19-May Secret Word: "Hoops", "Poops" Comment: "Hoops" probably just an extension of the Penguin-mythology, and "poops" just a corruption of "hoops". (MK) Paris, 20-May Secret Word: "Shellfish" Comment: Most likely more restaurant-related business. (MK) Stuttgart, 24-May Secret Word: Reagan-Gorbachow Moscow summit, "Star Wars" Comment: Before the show, the band had an offer to play in Moscow at the summit. This was never to be. Star Wars was a name for the space military projects. Mannheim, 25-May Secret Word: Cornhole Comment: Corn goes in the mouth, and comes out the corn hole. The word can also be used as a verb, meaning butt-fucking. This may have arisen from some Mann-Thunes bickering. (MK) Furth, 26-May Secret Word: "Shellfish", "Moo", "Big Two" Comment: The band noticed a, shall we say, rather amply endowed young woman in the audience. These "big two" obviously led to bovine associations - "Moo". Linz, 28-May Secret Word: "Winge", Scott Thunes' face. Comment: This was after the incident when Scott's name was removed from a cake, and his face was scratched off his laminated pass. "Winge", ie to "complain", which most of the band was doing a lot of. (MK) (ed. Note: "Winge" rhymes with "singe" and "binge". A common UK/Australian expression) Graz, 29-May Secret Word: "I'll be back" Comment: Of course a reference to Austria's Big Son, Arnold "Terminator" Schwarzenegger. Udine, 30-May Secret Word: "Turn off the Lights", "Popcorn" Comment: There were trouble with the lights at the beginning of the show. "Love of my Life" became "Turn off the Lights". Torino, 3-Jun Secret Word: "Don't drink the Water" Comment: Apparently someone had drunk the italian water and got stomach problems. "Diarrhea sounds good" in "Any Kind of Pain". Genoa, 9-Jun Secret Word: "Pizza", "Jellyfish" Comment: Genoa was the home of the pizza described in YCDTOSA 1. The jellyfish was in reference to the italian marine biologist Nando (Fernando Boero). ======================== ANECDOTES ABOUT THE TOUR ======================== (Also refer "Secret Words" for many anecdotes) SHOW: Columbus OH 06 Mar 88 >From Jeff G: I attended the March 6 show in Columbus OH. 60 Minutes had a film crew on stage supposedly getting footage for a piece they were going to do on FZ (and probably his voter registration effort). I don't think they ever aired that spot. One very funny thing that happened was during the Illinois Enema Bandit, they were playing around with an enema bag. One of the CBS camera men was bent over getting a close-up of Frank during a solo and Ike pretended to be shoving the enema hose up his ass. He tried to hook it in one of the cameraman's beltloops and it totally freaked the guy out. He just about dropped his camera! The audience loved it. SHOW Pittsburgh PA 08 Mar 88 From: Nestor Ovares The Zappa band was about halfway through their 1st set at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh, PA (3/8/88). We had driven from the Washington DC area and were so blown away at how small and intimate this little arena was. The sound was absolutely fabulous and we had 6th row seats. We then noticed the police starting to mess with some kids who were not in their seats. They were really pushing these kids around. Frank must have noticed it too, because right in the middle of City of Tiny Lights he ordered the band to stop playing!. He then asked, "What is this fascist oversupervision that we're seeing in the audience?". "Do we have some dangerous people in the audience?". This really surprised the cops!. They were so blown away that Frank would stop his show to comment on their appalling behaviour that they just walked away from the kids and never bothered any one again for the rest of the show!. The band jumped right back where they had left off. One of the next lines of the song was changed by Bobby Martin. He sang, "tiny, tiny POLICEMEN are gonna keep you warm". After the rest of the vocals were delivered, Frank proceeded to shred the arena with a monstrous guitar solo!. Frank's concerts could equally blend incredibly challenging and extremely difficult musical material with on the spot commentary and great humor!. The security force at the Syria mosque will never be the same! SHOW Rochester NY 11 Mar 88 From: Somebody... (?) My younger brother works for Mr. Thoroughgood and they happened 2B following Frank into some arena during that last tour and my brother happened to find a list of the songs on tap for that night's dining and dancing pleasure. I just thought about it with all the post about that tour so I dug out the paper - obviously written in FZ handwriting with all comments included. 1 Chunga*(Fuzz) 2 Packard 3 Andy* (Fuzz) 4 Inca* (D1) 5 Lucille 6 Swifty *(Fuzz/???looks like Jobys) 7 Penguin *(Fuzz) 8 Green Hotel* (Fuzz) 9 Lies 10 Jesus __________________________ 11 Judy * (Fuzz) 12 Find her finer 13 Orange County * (Fuzz) 14 Norwegian Wood 15 Lucy 16 Strawberry 17 Sofa __________________________ 18 Whippin' Post*(Fuzz) 19 Walrus ______________________ 20 Peaches * (D1) 21 Stairway * (Fuzz) _______________________ 22 America (the Beautiful)* (Fuzz) SHOW Stockholm Sweden 01 May 88 >From Peter Öberg I was there when Mats Öberg and Morgan Ågren played onstage with FZ's band in Stockholm in 88. They jumped on stage during Big Swifty and took place at the instruments & started with a improvisation (mats: keyb+vocals. Morgan : Drums) and went on with T'mershi Duween(not played perfect, but what the hey). I remember FZ:s words afterwards "Those guys were great". I had the pleasure to sit backstage with Mats, Morgan and Frank as they summed up the concert and spoke about music, the future etc. I still have the pen that FZ borrowed from me to write his address and show how he used to do scores for drums etc. =================== WHERE ARE THEY NOW? =================== IKE WILLIS From: Patrick David Neve OK, Ike Willis lives about a hundred miles from me, in Portland Oregon. He fronts the Ike Willis Band which does some FZ covers and originals, and they're quite good. I had the extreme fortune of getting to play a gig on the same bill as him. The odd thing was, they were before us and we were just not that popular. It was a booking fluke or agent favoritism. Anyways it was the Ike Willis Band, Us, (Unshakable Race..reggae), then the Buddy Miles Experience with some long-lost cousin of Jimi Hendrix doing a tribute Band Of Gypsys set in front of about 10,000 people on the waterfront in Portland Oregon. I got to meet Ike and tried to compliment him and "talk shop" a little without gushing off like a geeky fanboy. It was all I could do to not break into a Thing-Fish voice to solicit a reaction. I'm cooler than that, but not much. His demeanour was reserved yet outgoing, genuinely happy with the response, and not at all peeved that us local yokels ended up playing after him. All in all it was a humbling experience to get to meet and share the stage with one of my heroes. (The rest of my band, incidentally, said "Ike WHO?" They have a couple of albums, including "Shoulda Left Before I Got There." MIKE KENEALLY Mike is an active member of the cyberspace community and is often seen lurking around alt.fan.frank.zappa under the alias of BoilThat. His activities are well known to the Zappa community - Zappa's Universe, Z, etc. He also worked for the Zappa Family Trust for a time doing assorted things. For more info see the Keneally homepage at http://www.moosenet.com/keneally.html BRUCE FOWLER From: Patrick David Neve Bruce Fowler also lived in Portland, last I heard. He played on an album by a Portland funk group called Slack. This had to be around '89 or so. The album is called "Bigger Than Breakfast", and copies are still floating around. It's a good first-generation-white-funk project, before it got anywhere near as commercialized and 'hip' as it is now. Bruce has two solo CDs: "Ants Can Count" , 1990 "Entropy", 1993 SCOTT THUNES Played with Z, I know that much. Anyone got a better idea? From: Patrick David Neve Scott Thunes is touring with the seminal LA punk legend FEAR. This suprised others more than it did me, who was always clued in to Scott's punk mentality and appearance. Watching him sing in 1981 should have given some indication that he'd hop on with Lee Ving. I couldn't get up to Portland when they came through, but my friend said that the band was good and Scott is infinitely overqualified. Unfortunately only about 12 people showed up to the 3,000+ venue. I think songs like Beef Bologna are perfectly suited for Scott's aggro style. BOBBY MARTIN Married to Cybill Shepherd and musical director of her CBS sitcom Cybill. Released at least one solo album (called "Bobby Martin") during the 1980's. CHAD WACKERMAN Played with Allan Holdsworth on most tracks (on all albums) since at least 1987. Has released two solo albums "40 Reasons" and "The View". Was replacement musical director for (short-lived) Dennis Miller Show in early 90's. Lives in Australia on part-time basis. ED MANN Has a few solo releases and was (is ?) a member of the "Repercussion Unit" a band of 6 percussion players. He teaches percussion at CalArts. I had a friend who went there and I think Ed was one of his advisors. Ed Mann has at least two solo releases (early 90s) "Get Up" and "Perfect World". Ed Mann's "Have No Fear" due out this year on Muffin (in arrangement with CMP) WALT FOWLER Walt is on Chad Wackerman's latest, The View. Walt has a solo CD due for release soon. PAUL CARMAN ???? FREQUENCY OF SONGS PLAYED ========================= (Contributor Unknown) The following list is the song list from the '88 tour. The number indicates the number of times that the song was performed. This information was taken from a booklet that was attached to the CD, Broadway the Hard Way, thatI bought in Japan. It was noted that the frequency of songs may not be completely accurate, since the set lists were lost from the performances in Spain. The last column is the CD on which the song appears. There were some songs in the CD that were not on the booklet. These are probably the "spontaneously composed" songs like Yuppies, Star Wars, Fire and Chains, and others known by different names like "F-Sharp", etc. Ed. note: close examination of the existing set lists by a number of people has led to several corrections being made. The Bartok Piano concerto #3 and the Royal March from LeHistore' DeSoldat were performed as part of Packard Goose - hence they have the same number of performances in this list. The Theme from Bonanza was always played within Torture (refer BBYNHIYL) and hence it has the same number also. Send your disputes on down... There are two lists, songs practiced and performed (over 120) and songs practiced but never performed in 1988. If you have additional songs to be included in either list, please provide them and the source and I will update the FAQ. The list of the songs that were practiced but never performed was obtained from a booklet included in the Japanese version of Broadway the Hard Way.
