The Songbook contains piano transcriptions for Brown Shoes Don't Make It, Mother People, Igor's Boogie, Penis Dimension, How Could I Be Such a Fool, Let's Make the Water Turn Black, Oh No, America Drinks and Goes Home, Son of Suzy Creamcheese, Excerpt from Music for Electric Violin and Low-Budget Symphony Orchestra (piano with concert pitch melody line), Excerpt from Music for Electric Violin and Low-Budget Symphony Orchestra (transposed Bb Clarinet part), I'm Not Satisfied, Mom & Dad, Absolutely Free, Uncle Meat, The Idiot Bastard Son, Piano Introduction to Little House I Used to Live In (revised) plus a section of FZ's manuscripts, which are labeled "of limited interest". That mostly means that they're not playable--I think they're quite interesting. The manuscripts include A first sketch from the recording session of Waka=Jawaka, (only one page, with coffee stains, which quickly degenerates into scribbling). Two extracts from the "Pleated Gazelles" section of 200 Motels: "Nun Suit" (looks like piano + vocal) and "The Girl, In a Statement to the Press, Explains" (full score). The full score (orchestra) for "Can I Help You with this Dummy", which was originally scheduled for use in 200 Motels. From: sandell@sparky.parmly.luc.edu (Gregory J. Sandell) While visiting my folk's place in Calif. for the holidays, I dug through an old drawer trying to find my old copy of the Frank Zappa Songbook which I got in the early seventies...and I found it! Since this item disappeared shortly after it came out (Nigey Lennon believes it had a run of only 5000 copies), I assume few have seen it, and many would appreciate a description. I enclose a straightforward, factual description of the contents, followed by some personal observations. The melody part of the voice is usually contained in the piano part too, so pianists can read through the tunes and hear the melody. Chords names with guitar fingerings appear above the top stave. The piano parts lay pretty well under the hand. They are of medium difficulty: only a few can be read by beginners, but they seldom require anything resembling "virtuoso" technique. Playing them through is fascinating stuff. Alot of FZ's harmony is so familiar to me, that I don't think of it as unusual. But seeing it on the page, I see that there are fairly complex (and very "20th century") harmonic constructs in there. "Oh No", for example heavily uses chords made of stacked fifths (which one might think of as ninth chords). The piano part to "America Drinks and Goes Home" is a quite accurate transcription of the cocktail piano playing on the album. Lots of fun to play! Likewise for "Piano Introduction to Little House", which has always been one of my favorite compositions...Zappa showing the influence of Schoenberg's early piano opuses (11, 19 and 25 in particular). It is *very* accurate, and fascinating to see how he notated it. To me, the very most valuable part is the manuscripts from 200 Motels. There we see the way FZ wrote for vocal ensembles, and for full orchestra. The vocal ensemble harmony fascinated me for years: I played it at the piano many times trying to understand where his harmonies came from. (It amazes me that he did not compose at the piano!) The full scores are worthy of even more hours or years of study. The amount of performance detail (muting, types of drum sticks to use, dynamic markings, crescendi) is fascinating, the amount of detail that goes into some of the background textures is incredible (I'd never previously noticed on the recording a complex, polyrhythmic trio of bassoons at the beginnging of "The Girl..."), and the way in which Zappa got the sounds he got by precisely notating them is ingenious (the rhythms of the spoken voice parts are *completely* notated, wild glissandi from note to note are carefully indicated, and "funny" sounds like "fraudulent fanfares" are written out with precise pitches). It must have been fascinating to watch Zappa rehearse the RPO on this work. I've always thought that 200 Motels was FZ's *single* greatest musical achievement. Plastic People. Corrected Copy. Songbuch_ Deutsch von Carl Weissner, published by Zweitausendeins Frankfurt, Dezember 1977, No ISBN, 496 pages. Comments ---------------------------------- From: Johannes Labisch Every song is on the left page in english, on the right page you have a german translation (which is not very good as I know now, but it helped me to learn some nasty english words. :-) ) I don't know if it still is in print now. I heard a rumour that they are working on a second(third) edition containing the words of ALL LPs/CDs. (It now has only the words up to Bongo Fury, and Lumpy Gravy is missing.) From: Vladimir Sovetov 'Cause I lost another very informative Joe's posting :-(((((( I should explain myself that the words Corrected Copy mean one but very important thing. Lyrics ( mostly transcribed by some brave Germen ) was later CORRECTED by FZ himself. So you would cherrish not only nasty words :-) but also the genuine Frank (handwrited!) remarkes and corrections. The whole history goes like this. The copy of first edition ( unauthorised I believe ) was given to Frank during one of his German tour. Ok, - he called next day, - I like it, send me another 200 copies. Man! Are you kiddin'? But it was done. And after a while as compensation arrived from USA a copy with Frank own handwriting on many pages. And was printed as it was and called Corrected Copy. Beautiful book, but some omission is very disappointing. No Help I'm A Rock in Freak Out! section. No Strictly Genteel and Be-Bop Tango to gloriously end 200 Motels and Roxy respectively. Nobody's perfect, you know :-) From: weitz@popserver.rrzn.uni-hannover.de (Edi Weitz) Another little anecdote for those of you who do not live in German speaking countries: German publisher "Zweitausendeins" once sold a book with Zappa song texts from "Freak Out" to "Apostrophe" called "Plastic People". It had the English text on the right pages and the German translation on the left ones. The 1st edition was unauthorized. But afterwards they gave a copy to Frank and he made some corrections to it. The 2nd edition was a facsimile print of the 1st with FZ's handwritten notes in it. Of course, he almost exclusively corrected the English text - with one exception: In the "Dummy Up" dialogue, in the translation of the question "Where have you been living, Reseda?" he crossed out "Reseda" and replaced it with "Pforzheim"... Has anyone ever been to Reseda AND Pforzheim and compared these two???? :) Title Origins -------------------------------- ---------------------------------- _Zonx: Texte letzter Hand, 1977-1994_ Deutsch von Carl Weissner, published by Zweitausendeins Frankfurt, 1996, ISBN 3-86150-179-1, 646 pages. Comments ---------------------------------- From: weitz@math.uni-hannover.de (Edi Weitz) Date: Wed, 01 May 96 20:56:39 GMT German publisher "Zweitausendeins" (2001) just announced the world premiere release of the FZ songbook "Zonx: Texte letzter Hand, 1977-1994" It contains the lyrics of all Zappa albums since "Bongo Fury", all texts are printed in English and German and the whole project has been done in collaboration with FZ who also provided some footnotes. In a way this book is part two of "Plastic People" which covers the material from "Freak Out" to "Zoot Allures" - and which has been already discussed in this newsgroup. Both books are available at Zweitausendeins in Frankfurt, Germany. Their fax number is +49 69 415 003. In Germany, they only sell their books by mail-order or in a few stores that are owned by the company, not in normal book stores. From: Edi Weitz The "Zonx" book arrived yesterday. So, here's the additional information that you wanted to have: The title is "Frank Zappa: Zonx - Texte 1977-1994", and - believe it or not - there is _no_ ISBN! Maybe the reason is that this book isn't available in normal bookstores. However, in addition to ordering it at Zweitausendeins in Frankfurt, Germany, it can also be bought at "buch 2000" in Affoltern, Switzerland. It's the first edition from April 1996. The book covers song texts from "Zoot Allures" to "YCDTOSA vol. 4", plus an appendix with "unreleased lyrics, as of December 1990", containing: Am-nerica We been there These are the 90's Beneath contempt Lonesome cowboy Ron You look like a dork The Portuguese lunar landing Dragon master New world order Of course, the purely instrumental albums, like "Jazz from Hell", cannot be found in the book. But, alas, some other records are also missing, namely: YCDTOSA vol. 5 & 6 Does humor belong in music? Ahead of their time Playground psychotics Civilization phase III The lost episodes The yellow shark The best band you never heard in your life Make a jazz noise here Baby snakes Also, due to legal restrictions, only those parts of "Joe's Garage" that were part of the original screenplay are reproduced and translated. The book contains a few footnotes, some of which are due to FZ, e.g. he added that "Sheik Yerbouti" was meant as a phonetical spelling of "shake your booty". The translations are o.k., though not fantastic. One of the problems of Carl Weissner (who did them) is that he sometimes wanted the German texts to rhyme also... Nevertheless, it's a nice book. And I think it will be helpful to many FZ fans - especially to those of us whose native language isn't English, even if they don't understand the German translations. From: Edi Weitz The only explanation is: I must be blind at least sometimes. The "Zonx" book has an ISBN but I simply didn't see it! It's on the backside of the cover and the number is 3-86150-179-1. He is the editor of the rock magazine "TUTTIFRUTTI" published monthly, and before that he was the editor of another magazine called "ROCKSTAR". Both magazines are a kind of fashion thing mainly devoted to the USA and UK majors' music with some Italian stuff certainly not the best to my taste. He also wrote a book about FZ, published in 1982, called "ZAPPA (E' PIU' DURO DI TUO MARITO)" (in English: "Zappa (harder than your husband)"). Fortunately this book is mainly a lyrics and interviews thing with a few personal opinions at the beginning. I don't like very much this book but you must know that the only book about uncle Frank I like is THE REAL ONE! Title Origins -------------------------------- ---------------------------------- _Real Fake Book_ by ???? published ?????????? ISBN ??????, ????? pages Comments ---------------------------------- From: GWORSHAM@ix.netcom.com (Gary Worsham) I've seen the "Real Fake Book", often used by aspiring jazzbos for lead sheets. It contains (last I looked) lead sheets for "Son of Mr. Green Genes", "Peaches en Regalia", and "Blessed Relief". From: mkrotz@enet.net (Mark Krotz) I am looking for a copy of what I understand is called "The Real Book vol.III". I've also heard it called "The New Real Book vol. III" or the Fake Book, although I've been told "The Real Book" and "The New Real Book" are actually 2 different books. What I'm looking for supposedly (I've not seen one) has guitar tab or music for over 100 Jazz standards and some newer stuff, ie, Metheny. I'm told it is hand written, but some say someone has updated it on their computer, but it is not officially published. From: vasili2263@aol.com (Vasili2263) The illegal real book comes in three different volumes, each filled with different standards. You can get them in Eflat, Bflat, C, and Bass. Since they break every copywrite law in the book, they can be difficult to locate. Be assured, they are around, you just have to find them. People who do not know you to well will be hesitant to sell to you. Just go out to local jazz shows and talk to fellow musicians, usually they will help you out. Go to music stores and inquire about them, sometimes people working in stores have them to sell but do not want to publicise it. It is not against the law to ask around so do not be afraid. Also, find jazz teachers, they will most likely know. If you do not have any luck, for about the same price of the Real Book, you can pick up something called the New Legal Real Book. This should be available in most stores and the charts are as acurate as the illegal ones. Good Luck!! Title Origins -------------------------------- ---------------------------------- _Torchum Never Stops_ Vol. 1,2,3 & 4 by the Torchure Team, Published in Germany, 1991-1992, No ISBN, 796 pages Comments ---------------------------------- From: mdryden@cix.compulink.co.uk ("Martyn Dryden") Classic fan items as well as invaluable references. (Vol 1 lists all the official releases BTW.) I'd rate these above all other books except Miles' and NDOPP. They contain only 100% pure facts, many of them unobtainable elsewhere, nobody's stupid opinions (why pay for them, I've got my own), no after-taste. From: demery@prl.philips.nl (David Demery) Each volume is A4 sized, and contains around 200 pages. The books essentially break down into Vol. I - vinyl, Vol. II - CDs & cassettes, Vol. III - bootlegs, Vol. IV - live dates, plus updates to Vols. I to III. The books were put together by a group of German fans, so the English is not perfect (but what do you expect?). The books are essentially `hand- made', and in many instances the entries are merely copied from the album covers, as are the visuals. However, where these books do score is in the coverage of obscure releases -- Promos, special editions, pressings from around the World, different cover art, etc. Whilst I have heard that a lot of this information is ripped off from Zappalog, while that book remains out of print, the Torchum books do fill a gap. Volume IV contains a list of Zappa concerts over the years (not complete!), but does not contain set-lists; however, you could work some of them out by using the bootleg sections to find out what was played. You can get them from some book/CD shops here in Europe. I bought my own copies from Medium Music Books in Munster (that's u umlaut, folks), Germany. Details are: Medium Music Books Rosenstrasse 5/6 D-48143 Munster <<< remember the umlaut! Germany Tel. +49-251-46-000 Fax. +49-251-46-745 When I bought my copies one year ago, the price was DM. 29.80 per volume, without postage, so that's about $80 (in total) plus whatever they would charge to send them to you. I have no idea about what they accept as payment methods -- I used Eurocheques -- so US and other overseas people should ask them about that. I'm sure Barfko-Swill know exactly what these books are; however, they were not Zappa-endorsed, so they're hardly likely to help you. Since the books were meant to be done as a non-profit making exercise, one wonders what FZ would complain about, after all, they were books made by fans for other fans -- the person who stood to benefit most from their existence was FZ! From: Ale Mail In actual fact, the books made a loss for the Torchum Team (Reinhard and Willi, plus Peter the printer), which is a great shame considering the amount of time and effort put into them (having helped print/collate/bind these by hand, I can appreciate it!). We presented Frank with a signed set (number #1 - they were limited to 2000) via Dweezil at the Yellow Shark gigs at Frankfurt. Frank apparently read them and no writ was forthcoming from SheWhoCannotBeNamed so I guess he wasn't too upset by them (compared with his apopleptic fit pover Viva Zappa). They are full of errors, but one has to bear in mind that the information came from many sources, not all of which are reliable or verifiable. Plus the fact that they were produced by a couple of Zappaphiles for whom English is not their first language (and in the case of the first couple of volumes) typed up on a manual typewriter by Willi. Tanking this into cosideration I think they did a good job. The books are still essential to fans, though they could have been improved by the inclusion of 'reviews' of the material covered. On the subject of Boots, a lot of thought was out into whether or not to include them and risk the Wrath of Gail. In the end they decide that to omit mention of them would be a great dissrevice, and they got round the 'moral' problems by refusing to 'grade' bootlegs, comment on their quality or recommend any (in fact, we went as far as including a caveat saying that we did not think bootlegs were worth the money, and that we recommended that anyone who wanted to buy a bootleg should buy ALL of the official stuff before even thinking about bootlegs - something I still stand by today). Anyway, go buy them. They're fun and a useful reference. I'd love to see a second edition, but last time I spoke to Reinhard, he was running away screaming at the suggestion. If you read this, Reinhard, (or if John passes it on), give it a thought. I'll DTP it for you... Final word - buy them if you see them. Unbiasedly, dIRK -- Dirk Manuel - alemail@docs.demon.co.uk Vox: (010) 32.2.674.4247 From: scialli@primenet.com (John V. Scialli) I faxed Reinhard Preuss who runs Muffin Records Productions Ltd (Austin USA) and who was a major member of the Torchum Team (an offshoot of the Arf Society). I sent him this thread and his response is: The above from Dr. John, the below from Reinhard Preuss: TORCHUM books: Well, I'm out of this and I don't know how to get them, it was difficult to get the one set for Jason, I did give him just a favor. Frank received these books through Dweezil, Ahmet, Moon and Gail in Frankfurt at the SHARK concerts. We never heard a comment about it. I just know that Frank mentioned the exact number of bootleg vinyl, CD's, etc. once in a radio interview, which I have somewhere on tape, just can't remember which one it is. But I could find it. It is an interview he gave after the Shark concert, about 1 year later ('93). Never before (as far as I can say that) has Frank mentioned any numbers of bootlegs, he just talked about bootlegs in general. So I figured he had looked into the books pretty closely and I imagine he sorta liked them. OF COURSE - there are a lotsa mistakes and errors, the layout could be much better, actually EVERYTHING. But - would Frank or the family ever accept them? It would look professional and commercial! What you have in your hands is made by hand only (page by page) and made by fans without a thought about profit (indeed, we actually lost 30.000.--) and was a dammm big load of work which I never want to repeat anymore........ Everything is done with pure handwork, so it's printed on a 1 colour printmachine, bound, cut, etc. etc. etc. etc.etc. etc all by hand. We walked for many miles around the room to get the pages collected by hands! Oh well. I faxed your message [ see Dirk Manuel comments above ] to Herr Preuss and Reinhard replied: Interesting mail from Dirk Manuel regarding the TTNS books. You can bet that I still will run away screaming if he or anybody else comes up with the suggestion to start a second edition. Nice compliment, no doubt - but I do it never never again, in the meanwhile I'm getting to be 41 years old and there are too many other things left I like to do during my lifetime and I have no thought to repeat this TORTURE again for a few years. The books are named THE TORCHUM NEVER STOPS, because THE TORCHUM NEVER STOPS. At least vol. 3 of this is still perfectly updated, nothing has changed (or barely anything) since we have released it, but the bootleg himmel has grown and all. Besides that - MRP does still release stuff too........ No - thanks! That's it. I have no intention to try to get the permission of ZFT, indeed I think there would never be a one available for something like this. We were lucky enough to get NOT in trouble for this, which I do appreciate and it has reached its goal to inform people and bring Frank the benefit of our work. I, for one, do NOT want to lose more money and time on this than I did already. Dirk said already before vol. 4 was finished that he likes to see a second edition of it - go ahead Dirk! He knows how many times we had to spend just for getting the pages together, we walked many miles for it daily. Besides all that, if we would give a print company the order to do it, it would cost 480.000 DM (German Marks), we did all by ourselves for 130.000 and still lost 40.000 out of that budget. That may give you a good idea. Anyhow - thanks for the proposal, but it's not me. Reinhard Preuss Muffin Records Productions USA Austin From: dsmith@world.std.com (David Smith) I only have Volume 2. In particular, there is an analysis of all songs played on the tour, set lists and descriptions of each concert, including transcriptions of many spoken comments or lyric mutations, a selection of press cuttings reviewing the concerts, drawings and photographs, and even a quiz (with the answers, so you can see how you did). It is highly recommended. It is probably the largest and best Music library in Finland and in whole Scandinavia (I think...) Anyways, My boss Heikki Poroila has written, in collaboration with another Finnish Music Librarian, a new Zappa discography book, named : Recorded Zappa: annotated discography 1961-1995. The book is written in Finnish, but it has a lot of pages in English (quotes, explanations of songs and stuff) and the lists of records, videos, movie projects and so forth are very comprehensive and easy to follow even if you don't know the Finnish language so well...=) If you are interested in getting your own copy, write to Finnish Music Library Association, P.O.Box 148, FIN-01301 Vantaa, Finland or send a fax to Heikki Poroila, Vantaa City Library, fax 358-0-873 6471. ISDN ???? pages ??? Comments ---------------------------------- From: aumick@halcyon.com (Brad Aumick) I got this out of the book "Road Mangler Deluxe", by Phil Kaufman (Franks road manager in 1979), pages 159-160: We got stuck in a bus on the way to a huge concert (125,000 people) in Saarbrucken, Germany. We were playing with Joan Baez, Ten Years After, The Tubes and others. I said to Frank, 'We got to get there two to three hours early because it's a small town. " He said, "Oh, fuck that. " So the tour bus got stuck in traffic. We were going through the traffic and I had my Wild Turkey sandwich. I was sitting in the back and having a little drink. I went into the toilet which was located in the middle of the bus. Halfway through my piss, I jokingly started screaming and everybody was looking at me. I cried, "Frank, why does it hurt when I pee?" and everybody laughed. By the time we had gotten through the crowd to the venue, he had written a song called "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?" scored all the parts, given it out to all the guys in the band and made them play it that day. Needless to say, the band told me to shut my fucking mouth in the future. The song is on an album called "Joe's Garage" and if you see that album, you'll find a credit on the back which reads, "Special thanks to Phil Kaufman for asking the eternal question: Why does it hurt when I pee?" Gail Zappa is one of the interviewed women. It includes: #1) FZ Interview, by Frank Kofski. (1967) I think it is one of the earliest interview with Frank, which has very interesting discussion with the slightly-Marxist interviewer Mr. Kofski (I don't know the correct spelling of him). This interview took place in 1967 (the Garric theater era), just after Absolutely Free was released. #2) 'My brother is an Italian Mother' by Carl R. Zappa. (1968) Short essay about his relationship with his brother Frank. The content is almost his visiting to the infamous Log Cabin, where Frank chose to live after coming back from N.Y. The Japanese translation of this book includes these two items, but I heard a rumor that the original American edition has one more FZ interview. From: biffyshrew@aol.com (Biffyshrew) This book contains three articles on FZ: the lengthy "Frank Zappa Interview" by Frank Kofsky, "In Person: The Mothers Of Invention" by Doon Arbus, and "Zappa And The Mothers: Ugly Can Be Beautiful" by Sally Kempton. I'd like to quote the beginning of the Kempton piece, because it so perfectly evokes the mood of the Uncle Meat album for me: It is 1 A.M. on a Friday night and the Mothers of Invention are recording part of the soundtrack for their forthcoming movie. Ian is playing the harpsichord and Bunk is playing the flute. They huddle together in a cluster of microphones, Bunk leaning over Ian's shoulder to read the music propped up on the harpsichord stand. Bunk wears a goatee and a matching moustache, and his long thick hair is gray (in the studio light it looks like a powdered wig). Resembling a figure in an old etching, he bends closer to Ian, his flute poised, and Ian straightens his back and places his fingers on the harpsichord keys. Poised like musicians at a 19th century musicale, they wait for a signal to begin. One feels they are waiting to play a Mozart sonata. Inside the control booth, Frank Zappa, wearing a T-shirt bearing the legend "Herzl Camp, Garner, Wisconsin," is fiddling with knobs on the control board. "You're going to have to do the parody notes a little more staccato, Ian," he says through the intercom. "You want a little bebop vibrato on that too?" calls Ian.* "Yeah, a little bebop a go go," says Frank. Dick Cunk, the engineer, flips the "record" switch. "Okay, for fame and stardom," says Frank. "You ready?" Ian and Bunk begin to play a series of dissonant, rhythmic, oddly beautiful chords. The people in the control booth listen intently. "This is going to be a nice soundtrack," someone says. Frank Zappa is bent over a music sheet, writing out the next piece... Title Origins -------------------------------- ---------------------------------- _In Their Own Words_ by Bruce Pollock, published by Collier Books Macmillian Publishing Co., Inc. 866 Third Avenue New York, NY 10022 1975 ISBN (none), 231 pages Comments ---------------------------------- From: Paul Core This book consists of interviews with twenty contemporary songwriters on the subject of how they write. Many interesting artists (Phil Ochs, Pete Townsend, John Sebastian, Loudon Wainwright, John Prine, Harry Chapin, Buffy Saint-Marie) are included. Frank discusses his doo wop and country blues influences, the mid 1960's US freak scene and it's influence on topics for songs, the compromise between audience taste/expectations and Frank's personal taste, the move away from social protest, the fluidity of his lyrics, and several other topics. The interview is short and covers quite a range of topics. As a result, nothing receives treatment in depth and the transitions are sometimes abrupt. Interesting reading. Several of the other interviews are worth reading too. Title Origins -------------------------------- ---------------------------------- _The Rock Generation_ by Dennis C. Benson, published by Abingdon Press Nashville, TN 1976 ISBN 0-687-36531-7 80 pages Comments ---------------------------------- From: Paul Core This is a weird book that a youth pastor who is trying to be hip might be interested in. It investigates life and religion using rock references. Exercises and games using rock music are included. There is a board game called "Gig" where you try to make it to the top in the music business. It includes "The Breaks" cards (similar to Chance or Community Chest in Monopoly). Overall both the book and it's games miss the point much like the youth pastors who ultimately are never hip, try as they might. There are two flexi-discs included with the book. The interviews on these discs are for use with exercises and games in the book. Includes interviews with John McLaughlin, John Lennon, Alice Cooper, Bob Weir, Steve Marriot, Cheech Marin, Cass Elliot, Jim Croce, and Frank Zappa. The following is a transcription of Frank's contribution, titled "Decorating Time". "I decorate time for other people and in the process I decorate time for my own amusement. So I just go around decorating pieces of time with physical activity, notes, agitated air, and things like that. You can decorate time in a number of ways, there's all different kinds of architecture. There's all different kinds of design. There's all different kinds of time density. And depending on how much interest you have in appreciating decorated time, then that will indicate how intensely that time may be decorated before it peaks your mind out. You know some people will see or be exposed to a decorated time event and be boggled by it because it is just too active for them to perceive, they can't unravel it. And other people will see a time event that might be wonderful for one person or for another person might be too boring because there's not enough going on. I have a tendency to take time and work it to death. (there is the sound of an edit here) We went through all those dilemmas, sittin' around goin' 'Oh, what do we do with the kids?' I think the best thing to do is give them a little briefing. Tell 'em, 'You're going to be going to public school. They're a little weird out there but just be tough and get down there and do it. I can only speak from experience with my own kids 'cause they're the ones that I hang out with the most. They make up there own things that are fun to do and whatever they like to do, we just let 'em do it. If they want to draw on the wall, (laughing) go ahead! As a matter of fact, when we found out that they could draw very well on the wall, we got some unfinished furniture and gave them some magic markers and told them to do the furniture too. Whenever they do pictures we always save them and put 'em up. They're encouraged to be as artistically creative as they want to be. They dance. If we put on a Stravinsky record they go berserk, they run around the living room. Moon and Dweezil both they do ballet. They also like to do stunts. As an alternative solution if you think ballet is a little bit too puffterish, they also like to kick things over and wrestle. Dweezil likes Kung Fu and Karate. You know, like that. They decorate their time very well." The flexi discs are worth hearing if you like interviews (there is no music) but the book is hopeless. The book is called: Chances: And How To Take Them by Zappa It was written by Frank's (Frank V. Zappa) dad in 1966 (copyright date) and is dedicated to his wife Rose-Marie "Whose Kindness, patience and understanding has guided me through the many years of our married life. She knows not how to gamble but she does know when and how to take a chance." One of the freakiest things about this book of gamblings odds is the illustrations that appear throughout. They are almost identical in style to the illustrations by A.West in the RFZB. Here are the various chapters: 1) Probabilities 2) Systems 3) Keno 4) The One-Armed Bandits 5) Roulette 6) Dice or Craps 7) Poker 8) Horse Racing and Sports Betting 9) Black Jack or Baccarat 10) Miscellaneuos Dice and Card games 11) Mathematics of Possibilites The back cover has a picture of him and this info: ~~~~~ Frank V. Mr. Zappa is a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He has also taken additional work of Washington College in Chestertown, Md.; John Hopkins University and the University of California. Mr. Zappa has been a member of the foloowing Professional Societies: 1. American Metorological Society 2. American Society for Metals 3. American Rocket Society 4.
