As a result of the Rykodisk - Zappa Family Trust deal new generation of remixed once again CDs was lunched. So now we have - Old generation USA Rykodisk ( 2/3 of the catalog ) Barking Pumpkin ( the rest ) Europe EMI Zappa Records ( full catalog ) To depict peculiarity of that particular generation mix this document was originaly produced - New generation Now in progress in North America And obviously will make most part of the doc lookin' obsolete very soon, because there will be no more old generation stuff. So be carefull. And remember if you don't see direct reference to new generation, it's old stuff people talkin' about Doc Format Notes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Due to new era rapidly approaching us special appendix was added to the document. So version 3.0 has three parts. The first is terse and easy to browse Quick Reference Table. Only obviouse facts and undisputable details are there. The second is a personal Views and Opinions. You may believe or not, agree or have doubts. But still it helps. And the last is Ryko Statement. Or as they put it themself The Gory Details On the Rereleases. But I would never think of giving up any of my Zappa vinyl's. FREAK OUT --------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Better than the Vinyl album - particularly the digital treatment of the vocals and guitars. "MONSTER MAGNET" has been re-mixed slightly. "BRAIN POLICE" has a longer outro and segues into "..ELSES SHOULDER" Some digital reverb has been added to some songs without "mushing" them up too much. From: "Brian J. Bernstein" Brain Police - On the lp, the lines "What would you do if the label comes offffff >shehhheshhhshhh!!!< (crazy mind melting sound effect)" the sound effect is very loud/prominent/etc.. on the CD it was softened considerably From: Remco Takken You didn't try to call me. On vinyl this song last about 10 seconds longer and has a real ending, whereas the cd has a fadeout. ABSOLUTELY FREE --------------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Two bonus tracks (BIG LEG EMMA & WHY DONT YA DO ME RIGHT). The mix is the same as the vinyl with a bit more digital reverb. LUMPY GRAVY ----------- From: jeff@sol.cs.uni-sb.de (Joerg Zeyer) The bass and drum tracks of the CD version of LUMPY GRAVY do not sound like the ones of WOIIFTM, which obviously are rerecorded. So it seems to me me that the bass 'n' drum tracks of the CD version of LUMPY GRAVY are the original ones. I may be wrong since I never had heard the vinyl version of LUMPY GRAVY. ! From: natola@coos.dartmouth.edu (Mark A. Natola) ! I have never noticed any difference between the vinyl and CD versions of ! Lump Gravy. Has anyone else? Since I already have the combo WOIIFTM/LG, I ! can't see any reason to go out and buy another re-release of LG. See also WOIFTM comments From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY ------------------------------ From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Completely different to the album. All the songs have been re-mixed and new bass & drum tracks have been added. Some songs are sped up too. If you are used to the original vinyl album and love it - DON'T BUY IT. From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) On one CD with Lumpy Gravy. CD version has bass and drum tracks rerecorded, and worst of all, "Let's Make the Water Turn Black" is sped up so that it sounds like the chipmunk version. The missing/backward verses that had been censored in various ways on the album have been restored to "Other People" and "Harry, You're a Beast." From: fnord@panix.com (Cliff Heller) Unlistenable. Even after not hearing the vinyl version for several years, the CD version is just so shockingly WRONG. Stay away. Invest in a mint copy of the vinyl and make a digital recording of it. I believe the entire album is noticably (and annoyingly) sped up. Two of my all time favorite songs: Mother People and Absolutely Free were rendered unlistenable. From: Mr_Gigabyte@mindlink.bc.ca (Mike Quigley) Ditto for Hot Rats and Ruben and the Jets. From: spb0377@OCVAXA.CC.OBERLIN.EDU (Pat Buzby) I first bought this on CD, and have never heard the LP. It sounds fine to me. From: mcenaney@world.std.com (Brendan McEnaney) Going back to WOIIFTM for a minute, I just now conducted another thrilling test right here in my headphones by first playing the original (tape of a near pristine vinyl) followed immediatly by the dreaded CD. I wish somebody would pay me to conduct tests like this for a full time job. These are two great products to help fulfull your home entertainment needs. One of them is, unfortunatly currently unavailable. I don't care if I'm the only shmuck on the planet who feels this way but I *really* like *both* of these versions. For the last 80 minutes I just sat with the headphones on and didn't do anything but listen and let the music from both either push my buttons or not. It had been a couple of years since I'd listened to the vinyl and I really had a blast listening to it. I especially enjoyed hearing the original bass and drum tracks again after hearing the other version a few times. I half expected to join the forces that oppose the evil new release when I started it up immediatly after the original was over and so sat back and listened very attentivly for things to bum me out... ! From: spb0377@ocvaxa.cc.oberlin.edu (Pat Buzby) ! Yesterday I listened to various portions of the new WOIIFTM CD in the ! store. Some comments : ! 1. Nice packaging. Complete artwork from the original album. ! 2. For some reason, some of the bits which were censored on the original ! album (Gary's whispering about the Velvet Underground, the second ! verse of "Mother People") are still missing here. Other parts ! ("kick the shit out of me," "publicity balling") have been restored. ! 3. Some noticeable distortion + fuzz (some of which may have been the ! fault of the store's CD player), but I'm assuming that this is the ! best we can expect from these tapes. ! Overall : for those of you who wanted the original mix of the album ! (and it seems that there's a lot of you), here it is. Personally, I don't ! think I'm going to get rid of the previous Ryko CD version - as blasphemous ! as it may seem, my opinion is that some of the songs actually do sound ! better there. Still, I do plan on buying the new/old version as soon as I ! get enough funds to do so. :) CRUISING WITH THE RUBEN AND THE JETS ------------------------------------ From: jeff@sol.cs.uni-sb.de (Joerg Zeyer) It is well known that the CD version of CRUISIN WITH RUBEN AND THE JETS (along with WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY) is a remixed version of the original vinyl version and the drums and bass parts are rerecorded and sounding really bad and misplaced. But as far as I can hear it there seem to be three exceptions: On STUFF UP THE CRACKS, the bass AND the drums sound as if they were the original recording (moreover, I believe I can hear TWO drummers). And on ANYTHING and NO NO NO the bass seems to be rerecorded while the drums sound as if they were the original recordings. From: Chris Ullsperger The Reuben and the Jets CD has also had its bass and drum tracks overdubbed and, like WOIFTM, has basically been ruined. Otherwise, it's the same. Where is the Sonic Solution guy to take care of those old masters???? From: robert@sybase.com (Robert Garvey) I'd read somewhere (The Real Frank Zappa Book?) that "Stuff Up the Cracks" was put onto CD from a two-track mix as the original master was nowhere to be found. UNCLE MEAT ---------- From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) Sound quality is the same. The CD contains some excerpts from the making of Uncle Meat, which is quite a lot of material. Also a new song, "Tengo na Minchia Tanta." HOT RATS -------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) PEACHES sounds better. WILLIE THE PIMP 's intro is mixed differently. MY GREEN GENES suffers the most - the drums are lost in a wash of cymbals. LITTLE UMBRELLAS sounds better. GUMBO is about 5 minutes longer - good mix. CAMEL sounds better. Some additional tracks (recorded during the original sessions) have been mixed back in. The sound quality is better than the vinyl for the obviious reasons, but this IS an example of CD's bringing out the limitations of analog tape, particularly when the tape is nearly 25 years old!! From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) The intro to The Gumbo Variations is longer on the CD. The CD has much less dynamic range than the vinyl. This may not be noticeable unless you have really good speakers. From: spb0377@OCVAXA.CC.OBERLIN.EDU (Pat Buzby) I don't know about that. The CD completely blows away the vinyl for me : it's like the difference between black-and-white and color TV. From: fnord@panix.com (Cliff Heller) Some folks complain about Hot Rats, but I love that CD.Sure it's a question of taste, but the people who have problems with particular releases do have valid concerns that should not simply be dismissed because Frank did it and Frank is an infallible god. From: swj8s@Virginia.EDU (Sten Winfield Johnson) Great sound, but noticeably remixed, bringing in unheard elements from the original sessions. At times, the additions are welcome (a longer intro on "Gumbo Variations"), but sometimes intrusive (piano vamping during "Little Umbrellas") From: mcenaney@world.std.com (Brendan McEnaney) One more thing... I've also seen people post that Hot Rats is another one on the shit list. That was the first CD purchase I made when I first bought a deck. It had just been released (inspiring me to buy the deck in the first place) and was a limited edition gold disk. That sucker sounds fucking G R E A T ! BURNT WEENY SANDWICH -------------------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Much better sound quality than the vinyl album. WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH ----------------------- From: obrecht@imagen.com (Doug Obrecht) I just picked up Weasels Ripped My Flesh in CD (I had the vinyl) in a used bin. "Weasels..." is still my favorite title for a FZ album and has the BEST album cover art (IMO). An extra 3 minutes was added to "Didja Get Any Onya?" "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Sexually Aroused Gas Mask" has been remixed a bit.The song "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" is still 2:08 of feedback and noise. Oh well. There are no speedups or added instruments as far as I can determine. "RZZZZZ!" From: swj8s@Virginia.EDU (Sten Winfield Johnson) This album is altered for the CD release. The opening track is extended and segues into "Directly from my Heart", which is annoying. Other tampering exists also, but I have difficulty being specific. From: Remco Takken Not only does Directly from my heart to you segue into the next song, it's also 3 seconds shorter than on vinyl. CHUNGA'S REVENGE ---------------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Same mix. Good sound quality. From: "Brian J. Bernstein" Tell me you love me's 'melody guitar' is slightly mixed different on the CD... it's level is reduced? FILLMORE EAST, JUNE 1971 ------------------------ From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) This album was badly recorded to begin with. The CD makes that all the more apparent. Vocals have been treated and improved. Willie the pimp part one and two are now 'AS ONE' , but it now fades out. From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) The second half of "Willie the Pimp," which opened the second side of the LP, is missing on the CD. Other than that, no difference. 200 MOTELS ---------- From: robert@sybase.com (Robert Garvey) As far as I know, 200 Motels has never been released on CD. I don't think Zappa ever gained ownership of that soundtrack from United Artists/MCA, as was the case with all his work on Verve and the Warner Brothers material. 200 Motels had been issued cassette, though. It was apparently released some years ago as part of MCA's classic soundtracks series. That seems a bit ironic. Classic? Not by general standards, though probably in the view of many readers of this group. From: s0420778@let.rug.nl (R. Bartelink) Indeed, it hasn't been released on CD, because Frank didn't have the rights. I doubt if it ever will appear on cd, since it isn't one of uncle Franky's biggest "commercial successes". The LP isn't very good produced btw. When played on a not even so very high volume level, you can here some "pre-echoes" (is this a REAL word, well you know what I mean) from the master tape. The louder parts, especially in a high pitch, are even distorted. Let's say it's just a must-have-thing. From: epb3r@Virginia.EDU (Erik Paine Brady) United Artists has the rights to the soundtrack, since it is a film. No legal cd copies exist, but I know there are copies out there (in Germany, at least). It's a double cd and I'm not sure if it's taken from the masters or not (don't know how it could be) but the sound is great. From: Michael W. Cook Yeah, 200 Motels is DAMN rare. And unfortunately, you will probably never see it on CD. It was released on a label and went belly up. Legal rights were probably never settled. Real shame because there are some great notes on that one. From: Wolfgang Schauff Unfortunately this CD is not in stock anymore and will not be in stock in the near future. All I have is the trackinformation. No further info availbale. It is no official release. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CAT.NO.: FZ005-CD FRANK ZAPPA * 200 MOTELS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DISC1 1. Good sound quality. WAKA/JAWAKA ----------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Same mix. Good sound quality. From: David van Noortwijk One of the most treasured icons of my adolescence was the climactic fashion in which a vinyl Big Swifty gloriously resolved, punctuated with some amazingly genius church bell percussion (or whatever they're called). On my new Ryko release CD this moment has truly been buggered to oblivion. The bells are still there, but much too prominent and too separated. Ah well...that's growing up for ya. See also Grand Wazoo comments From: spb0377@OCVAXA.CC.OBERLIN.EDU GRAND WAZOO ----------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Same mix as original album. Sound quality better too. The track order is different - " The Grand Wazoo" precedes "Calvin" . From: db832@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Phillip A. Freshour) Interesting. This is not so in the States. I have both the vinyl and CD versions of Grand Wazoo, and "Calvin" and "The Grand Wazoo" are tracks #1 and #2, respectively, on both. From: spb0377@OCVAXA.CC.OBERLIN.EDU (Pat Buzby) I do know that Grand Wazoo is missing the musician photos from the original album, and that Waka/Jawaka is missing the FZ photos. Boo! OVER-NITE SENSATION ------------------- From: sova@kpbank.kemerovo.su (Vladimir Sovetov) On the same CD as an APOSTROPHE APOSTROPHE ---------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Better than the vinyl album, although The Excentrifugal Force has been re-mixed - the horn part is missing just before the vocal comes in. From: "Brian J. Bernstein" Excentrifugal Forz - the intro guitar melody is 'stronger' or more prominent on the LP than on the CD From: jeff@sol.cs.uni-sb.de (Joerg Zeyer) By the way, you have to be careful when talking bout the CD versions of Zappa's records: in some cases there exist different versions on CD, since some appeared on the label RYKODISC and in a different mix on the label ZAPPA RECORDS/BARKING PUMPKIN. For instance, APOSTROPHE/OVERNITE SENSATION appeared on the RYKO label, and it was the same mix as on vinyl. It also appeared on ZAPPA RECORDS some years later and this was a ``remastered'' version. From: jlrobins@unccsun.uncc.edu (James Lee Robinson) Is it just me or is the sound quality of the Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation disc substandard? Is is just because it is mastered at a lower volume than other discs (i.e. MAJNH)? I noticed this through having my disc changer shuffle a 6-pack of Zappa, and this disc suffered noticably. Anyone else bugged by this? How does the LP version sound? Any other re-releases with the same "problem"? From: Vladimir Sovetov Yes, the sound volume of my A/OS Ryko disc is also noticeably lower than volume of my other CDs. Freak Out, Chunga, Zoot etc. The sound volume of (') LP ( I still have one ) seems to be as good as of my OSFA and WRMF LP. From: db832@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Phillip A. Freshour) My pristine vinyl copy of 'Apostrophe' sounds brighter than the CD. As an aside, there is a little 'skritttch' just before the wind-noise that introduces 'Huskies'. I always expect to hear that little aberration when- ever I play the CD. Of course, it isn't there. My brain has been imprinted. ROXY AND ELSEWHERE ------------------ From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Same mix. Good sound quality ONE SIZE FITS ALL ----------------- From: sova@kpbank.kemerovo.su (Vladimir Sovetov) No one ever reported anything horrible. So let's suppose that OSFA is OSFA in either of it's incarnations. Really Chump Hare Rama ain't no good to try remixing :-))) BONGO FURY ---------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Same mix. Good sound quality ZOOT ALLURES ------------ From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Same mix. Good sound quality From: spb0377@OCVAXA.CC.OBERLIN.EDU (Pat Buzby) Zoot Allures is the one case I know of where the CD is inferior to the LP. It's a subjective difference, but I noticed a certain boxy quality to the CD sound that I never noticed on the album. Also, the last scream on "Torture Never Stops" is obnoxiously placed at the introduction to the next track. FRANK ZAPPA IN NEW YORK ----------------------- From: sundin@cs.chalmers.se (Ulf Sundin) CD version of Zappa in New York contains about 45 minutes more music, distributet over five new songs and one extended version. The new songs are 'Cruisin' for burgers', 'Punky's Whips','I'm the Slime', 'Pound for a Brown', and 'The Torture never stops'. From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) The CD is much longer, containing more cuts and longer existing cuts, such as "Titties and Beer." From: Vladimir Sovetov The CD is much better than LP ( even double as it happened to be :-). And really worth buying. From: Remco Takken I have to investigate this one more thoroughly, but I already know that the song 'Honey don't you want a man like me' is a different version of the vinyl version. You can really hear how tight Zappa's band played when it played the songs straight: the differences are extremely subtle. STUDIO TAN ---------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Has anyone noticed the 'strange' edit in the CD version of Greggary Peccary? There's a bit missing!! Maybe a couple of seconds of music has been edited out compared to the original. Its the percussion bit after Zappa says "where they keep the government buldings" Why was this done? From: pola0002@gold.tc.umn.edu (Daniel J Polanski-1) I haven't heard the original vinyl for years but I'd swear the CD sounds a lot different from what I remember. Perhaps he re-did on his synclavier. From: spxscr@thor.cf.ac.uk (simon roberts) Greggary Peccary has a few bits snipped out on the CD relative to the vinyl, but it has a full ending instead of a fade out. From: spb0377@OCVAXA.CC.OBERLIN.EDU (Pat Buzby) probably:-) On Studio Tan, for some reason "Revised Music" comes before "Lemme Take You To The Beach" rather than after. Otherwise, all three are similar aside from the addition of musician credits. SLEEP DIRT ---------- From: Chris Ullsperger The Sleep Dirt CD contains Thana Harris' vocal tracks on the Hunchentoot numbers (Flambay, Spider of Destiny, Time is Money) and represents an important "restoration" in my opinion. Essential for continuity. Too bad that musical will never see the light. From: Vladimir Sovetov But you should listen to it three or four times to stop thinking that Thana Harris voice just spoiled 15 minutes of excellent music. So be patient :-) From: Richard K Fox The CD also has drum tracks overdubbed by Chud Wackerman on the songs which previously did not have drum tracks. From: robert@sybase.com (Robert Garvey) However, as far as I understand it, Sleep Dirt was one of the albums released by Warner Brothers while Frank had them in court for "aromatic fiscal practices" (i.e. shoddy accounting, overruns, etc.) and as such Zappa had very little to say about that release. Other albums in this category are Studio Tan and Orchestral Favorites. So what we hear on Sleep Dirt is probably much closer to what Zappa had in mind for the material to begin with. From: spb0377@ocvaxa.cc.oberlin.edu Actually, this is true of almost all of the FZ CD reissues, but people who've had the LPs for years tend to have a hard time accepting this sort of change. From: Larry Brantley About 11 seconds of the transition from Flambay to Spider Of Destiny has been edited out on the CD. ! From: gunther@bga.com (Joe Newman) ! Yes, they left the annoying vocals on it. I'm keeping a turntable ! until a non-tape writable digital consumer medium becomes available. ! Then I can archive the good version of "Sleep Dirt" and my Doodles ! Weaver album. SHEIK YERBOUTI -------------- From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) I'm So Cute is shorter by about a minute - the synth noise that was at the end has been edited out. Sheik yerbouti Tango is a couple of minutes longer. Mix and sound quality is great. From: aj153@FreeNet.Carleton.CA (David Watson) "The Sheik Yerbouti Tango" extended to about four minutes, while most of the ending of "I'm So Cute" is lopped off (FUCK!!). Quality almost as good as the vinyl. From: jjr@cbnewsb.cb.att.com (jeffrey.j.rocca) I have both an EMI CD and a Barking Pumpkin CD of _Sheik Yerbouti_. The EMI CD is a digital master of the LP. The music content on the EMI CD has not been altered, as was done with the Barking Pumpkin CD. From: menardi@ERE.UMontreal.CA (Menard Isabelle) The EMI CD is exactly like the album. I would even predict that they release the vinyl version of a album unlike Bob Stone and FZ who remix about all first five albums. I am a long time fan of the first five (Freak, Absolutely, Were only, Ruben and Uncle) and when the CD version came out (as well as the FZ Box I) I was very sad that they did not keep what was so wonderfull about those album: they sound "old". But they should!!! It's like listening to a coloured film of the 1920-1930's. It's not real and the charm of it is lost in a certain way. It is just another interpretation of the same song but the original will always be very important to FZ fans. From: Rob Sweet The song "Bobby Brown" is renamed "Bobby Brown Goes Down" on the CD release. JOE'S GARAGE ------------ From: ais014@news.salford.ac.uk (Neil) Great Mix. Much better sound quality, particularly the bottom end. From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) No discernable difference in sound quality or content. The art on the booklet is changed, and there are two song title changes. "Toad-o Line" has become "On the Bus," and "Wet T-Shirt Night" has become "Fembot in a Wet T-Shirt." I'd like to know how these changed, because I think the original titles are better. From: David van Noortwijk I picked up this CD in Prague last summer (94). 'Manufactured by Globus' it said, 'for the Czech Republic.' Special deal he? Though the album is generally fine, the Green Rosetta mix leaves a lot to be desired. The little raps about the 3rd and 4th world record players are hardly audible and the line: "If all else fails, throw the record away." even less so. Instead, we hear those studio secretaries groovin'away better/closer than ever before. TINSELTOWN REBELLION ------------------- From: Larry Brantley The EMI (UK) CD has a gap of about 5 seconds between Easy Meat and For The Young Sophisticate. On the LP, there is no gap. I do not know if the Rykodisc CD has this gap. YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS ------------------- From: Chris Ullsperger On the You Are What You Is CD, the guitar solo has been deleted substantially because (according to one explanation) there is a change in pitch or key during the album flip (you'll remember that one side ends with the solo fade-out and the next side begins with a cut back in--that's where the key change is--, and quickly segues into Heavenly Bank Account). From: nas@unirsvl.rsvl.unisys.com (Neil Schlegel) I recently picked up the 'You are what you is" CD, and have noticed an annoying irregular volume on many of the vocal tracks (I hear something similar to dropouts in old cassettes) . It is very noticable (to me) in 'Charlie's enormous mouth', 'Any downers' and 'Jumbo go away'. From: kta@er3.rutgers.edu (Uncle Meat) I got the Cd a few years ago and wondered if my speaker wires were loose!! Certain tracks fade in and out, left and right with no rhyme or reason. I returned the Cd to the record store and got a different copy, only to find the same thing happening on the new one. I gave up and bought the album. From: bhyde@harris.com (Brian Hyde) I have seen several posts about this subject here. Aparently, some of the YAWYI CDs are fine, yet others exhibit the strange audio problems that you described. I have a Rykodisc release which is fine. I bought it about two and a half years ago. The problem may occur only on a certain manufacturing lot of the CD's. My YAWYI CD: - Rykodisc Catalog Number: RCD 40165 - Has "MADE IN USA BY PDO", "818 PUMPKIN", and "RCD40165 01!" inscribed on the track side of the CD - label side of the CD is black with white lettering except for a light blue "RYKO" on it Hopefully we can figure this out. . . From: sjolli@plains.NoDak.edu (Bjorn Sjolli) OK, here goes: My CD is excellent. - EMI # CDP 7 90075 2 - Has "MASTERED BY NIMBUS" inscribed. - Silver color with black lettering. - Made in U.K. MAN FROM UTOPIA --------------- From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) The CD contains an extra song, the name of which escapes me right now but it's doo-wop, and "Sex" is longer, which suits me fine. What doesn't suit me is that the sound quality of the CD stinks on ice. The bass is booming without being loud. When I played it, I thought my speakers had been blown. However, the vinyl played just fine. From: fnord@panix.com (Cliff Heller) Plus a completely different song order."Sex" had an extra verse, but some parts in the chorus were unnecessarily hit with a pitch bender. It sounds stupid, he should have left that one alone. The other songs sound fine to me and I have the vinyl. From: mike.bitts@labb.com (Mike Bitts) One thing I did not see mentioned is the different (new?) recording of Moggio on the import (England) 'Man From Utopia' CD. The drum sounds are from the Them or Us/Mothers of Prevention period, and I'm almost certain that the bass was re-recorded. I haven't heard the Barking Pumpkin version of the CD. If you have any info regarding this, I sure would appreciate hearing from you. From: lewand@physics.isu.edu (Jim Lewandowski) I know this subject has been discussed before but I haven't seen any mention of MFU and how it was terribly altered in the process of being remixed for CD. Though I'm now becoming more accustomed to the sound I'll never get over losing the guitar in "Moggio". Although "Luigi .." was a nice addition. From: "Scott Shupe" I have a cd with _man from utopia_ AND _ship arriving too late_ on a single cd. it sounds identical, content wise, to the album(s) except for Moggio. now i'm sensitive to this anyway because Moggio might be my favorite zappa song, but it is radically remixed. there is a strange reverb throughout and the guitar part sounds different. the guitar part mixed up a little on the cd, i'm not sure if it's a different part or just a different mix. i'm told there are separate cd releases for both these albums. maybe those are the ones your readers had reviewed [ in this FAQ]. The Man From Upopia/Ship Arriving too late to save a Drowning Witch CDP 7 90074 2. Here is the wierd part, MFU (1983) is first , tracks 1-10 then SATLTSADW (1982), tracks 11-16. no extra tracks. It says EMI and also has the Barking Pumpkin label. THING-FISH ---------- From: Joerg Holle The CD-Version of "He's so gay" includes some background-talking of Brown Moses (= Johnny 'Guitar' Watson), who makes 'comments about the situation', which is not on the vinyl-copy of THING FISH. THE PERFECT STRANGER -------------------- From: jjr@cbnewsb.cb.att.com (jeffrey.j.rocca) I have both an EMI CD and a Barking Pumpkin CD of _The Perfect Stranger_. The music content is identical on the CDs, but the sound quality of the Barking Pumpkin CD is far superior. FZ MEETS THE MOTHERS OF PREVENTION ---------------------------------- From: sundin@cs.chalmers.se (Ulf Sundin) CD contains all of the songs of the differnt 'european' and 'american' versions of the LP. This means 'Porn Wars' (american version of LP) 'I don't even care' (european v) 'H.R. 2911' (europ) 'One man one vote' (europ) From: "Ottis R." 'H.R. 2911' does not appear on the RYKO release of FZMtMoP CD. From: fnord@panix.com (Cliff Heller) I heard that it was incorporated into Porn Wars. JAZZ FROM HELL -------------- From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) It's been a while since I heard the LP, but I think there is no difference. LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ------------------------- From: cbk@austin.ibm.com (Clayton Kusaj) Just bought LSO vol 1 2 weeks ago and love it. Just checked out the Zappa discography on: http://www.fwi.uva.nl/~heederik/zappa/albums/ and it lists the following tracks: 1. Sad Jane (9:55) 2. Pedro's Dowry (large orchestra version) (10:26) 3. Envelopes (4:11) 4. Mo 'N' Herb's Vacation Part 1 (4:50) 5. Mo 'N' Herb's Vacation Part 2 (10:05) 6. Mo 'N' Herb's Vacation Part 3 (12:56) My version does not have: 2. Pedro's Dowry (large orchestra version) (10:26) 3. Envelopes (4:11) My version ends with Bogus Pomp From: Richard K Fox A combination of LSO I and II released on CD. From: John Henley ! It's no exaggeration at all to say the new London Symphony ! Orchestra discs have been "completely remixed and remastered." ! ! The LSO sessions were done when digital was still pretty new. ! Frank took full advantage of what digital "tweaking" was available ! at the time, to completely reshape the basic sound. A digital ! "atmosphere," or "sheen," was applied to the tapes, and also a ! pretty heavy re-verb. ! The results were twofold: the orchestra was given an incredibly ! lush, "romantic" sound, giving FZ's compositions a professional polish ! they'd never had before; and, all the mistakes were covered up in ! the general mix. LSO Vol 2 had the more mistake-riddled takes on it, ! and they tended to be just a tad more ragged-sounding than Vol 1 - ! but still pretty slick. ! For the re-mix, the digital sheen has been eliminated, and ! the re-verb cut _way_ back. ! Again, the results are two-fold: now, the raggedness of the ! LSO's performance can be heard in all its glory. Mistakes in ! "Sad Jane" that just weren't audible before are right out front, ! now. This is very likely the sloppiest performance ever issued under ! the name of the London Symphony Orchestra. ! And oddly, this phenomenon doesn't hurt the music - it helps. ! Melodies which were very hard to pick out of the digital sheen ! can now be plainly heard. Some instruments that were buried ! in the mix now take their rightful place in the ensemble. Percussion ! instruments are sharp and crisp. "Sad Jane" is now emotionally affecting, ! rather than just "pretty." As I listened to this thing last night, and adjusted ! to the new sound, I got more and more fascinated - and I've heard these records ! dozens of times. ! Lumpy Gravy and 200 Motels were pretty sloppily pulled off, too, ! and Orchestral Favorites alternated between sharp and sloppy. Now LSO ! fits right in with that group. We listeners to FZ's serious ! music are quite used to raggedy ensembles. LSO's not as well-played ! as Perfect Stranger or Yellow Shark, but the music is just magnificent. ! I am delighted that the entire sessions have been issued. ! Pedro's Dowry is one of my very favorite FZ pieces and IMO is the ! best performance on LSO, and I hated not having it on CD before now. ! (It's even better on Orchestral Favorites, where the smaller ensemble ! fits the music better.) ! I think this reissue is completely successful. ! Gratuitous commentary: I understand that the original LSO ! CD now becomes the "LSO Sampler." To call the new one "LSO Vol.s I & II" ! is correct insofar as all cuts are now present, but it's misleading in that ! the order of tunes is completely changed. Disc one does not correspond to ! Volume I. It would be more appropriate to call it just LSO, but I guess ! you can't have two records with the same title. GUITAR ------ From: sundin@cs.chalmers.se (Ulf Sundin) 12 extra guitar solos on the double CD BROADWAY THE HARD WAY --------------------- From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) The CD contains many more songs than the vinyl but is missing the short Confinement Loaf intro to "Dickie's Such an Asshole." From: Mr_Gigabyte@mindlink.bc.ca (Mike Quigley) Frank exhorts the audience to register to vote during the intermission on the vinyl version. I don't think this is on the CD... From: pepke@scri.fsu.edu (Eric Pepke) Yes, 'tis, but the "intermission" is in the wrong place. The exhortation to vote is at the very end of the CD. I have no joke. I just like typing "exhortation." Ryko Statement/The Gory Details On the Rereleases ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: rykodisc@delphi.com Date: Fri, 28 Apr 95 17:03:20 -0500 THE HOT POOP ON THE FRANK ZAPPA CATALOG REVISITED (Or the Rykodisc re-release FAQ) Here is the real story of what Rykodisc is doing with the catalogue, on a release-by-release basis. Updated schedule and jewel box info at the end. The Music: In the mid-80's, Frank transferred everything that was analog to digital; remixing, editing, spiffing, tweeking, tweezing. This resulted in the first batch of FZ CDs - most on Rykodisc, some on Barking Pumpkin and other labels. In the early 90's, prior to the sale of his catalog, he reviewed all titles. He approved new masters on everything (some of the actual work being done to his specifications after his death). In the case of the last two volumes of You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore (Vol. 5 & Vol. 6), Playground Psychotics, Ahead Of Their Time and The Yellow Shark, new timing sheets were created, but because they had been mixed and mastered as recently as 1991-1993, the original masters were simply error checked and OK'd (in other words, new masters weren't delivered on these). New timing sheets were created on all titles so the song times listed are now accurate. Details on other titles follow. The Artwork: When Zappa's albums were first released on CD, the artwork size was reduced, sometimes graphics were discarded, sometimes color images became black & white. The new releases have restored most of the LP art, color is back, fold-outs exist in many titles to better simulate the original intent. Much of this work was done in consultation with the wonderful Cal Schenkel. In addition, new images were added beneath the rear tray in as many titles as possible. Many of these were from the Schenkel files. Pictures of Frank are on the discs themselves (3 different shots -- early, middle, late). Miscellaneous: Everything has been given a new, chronological catalog number. We don't have the right to rerelease 200 Motels yet, but we did reserve a catalog number for it (#10513/14). All titles have an FZ-only minicatalog included. Uncle Meat, Joe's Garage and Thing-Fish are in double CD cases because of their librettos/booklets. All other double CDs are in slimline cases, at the request of retail, who can stock more Zappa titles that way. True, there are a few typos here and there, but every effort has been made to catch them all, and fix 'em on the second printing. (Second printings have already begun on several titles.) Gory Details: Freak Out! New master. New timing sheet. Clicks removed. Restored artwork. "Help, I'm A Rock," which was a "suite in three movements" on the original Verve LP, and was one track on the first CD, is now two tracks -- "Help, I'm A Rock" and "It Can't Happen Here." (It appeared this way on the Old Masters LP too.) We're Only In It For The Money Separated from Lumpy Gravy. New digital master made from original edited analog master and other raw mix segments, and re-edited. Restored to version released by Verve in 1968. Restored artwork. Hope this helps you make some informed purchasing decisions. We're pleased that we've been able to make substantial upgrades in the packaging of these rereleases, to do justice to the masters that Frank approved as final versions. It's our privilege to have a part in maintaining his legacy. Thanks to all of you that have communicated your pleasure with the improvements we've made. And it's good to know that many of you consider these "must have" CDs. But we understand that to buy the new versions when you've already purchased the first CDs is a major financial investment, so rest assured that Rykodisc stands by the old versions, as they were the best we and Frank could produce at the time. The new ones, though enhanced in every way currently practicable, and as groovy as we know how to make 'em, will not cut your taxes or prevent cavities (although they just might make you take your clothes off when you dance). We're particularly looking forward to a whole new generation who never listened to Frank Zappa giving his remarkable music their attention. We've made every effort to do right by him. If the hubs on your CD trays should break, you can either fax or mail: Rykodisc Shetland Park 27 Congress St. Salem, MA 01970 ATTN: Green Trays or e-mail: info@rykodisc.com Be sure to put "green trayZ" in the message header.
